Eleven friends and I were in a pool where we each picked 7 golfers in a snake draft. All of us were in a group text and we were rooting for our favorites and snarking on our “villains”
the Group text probably had 600 posts in the four days.

and ftr, i almost didn’t post in this thread because of this
I just don’t why this has to be posted.
I’m not sure the typical course you play, but those greens are on another level from just about any other non-pga tour course, wickedly fast, and insane undulations. I’m about a 10 handicapper and I guarantee I would 3 or 4 putt more holes on that course than I would 2 putt.
I was on a golf forum for most of the final round, in a thread which got c. 6,000+ posts up to that moment, came back here as the round was wrapping up, a bit annoyed that a thread had still not been started, and finally broke down and started one, figuring I’d get maybe 1-3 other Dopers to briefly chime in before someone finally won the thing and the thread promptly fell down the forum page.
Yeah, the Tiger and vs. threads got very tiresome after awhile, esp. as a now-vanished Doper was consistently banging his Tiger Is Great And I’ll Refuse to Engage Honestly With the Topic one note on his little piano, that I basically got discouraged about discussing golf here with anyone, for good or bad.
The Augusta Golf Club has an absolutely despicable history, yet CBS and professional golf allow them complete control over this event. If you are not aware of the history, you might want to do a little research.
I am well aware of the history. ANGC has taken measures to rectify their policies. They host a Drive Chip and Putt competition for supporting Junior Golf. they host a championship for the best Amateur Women Golfers.
But what’s done is done. You cannot undo the past.
Do you refuse to travel to confederate states because they were once slave states? How long does it have to be before ANGC gets a “Dinsdale” Seal of Approval?
Looking back on it, the only time I had any real passion for the sport was during the heyday of Phil Mickelson. As someone of real talent and drive who took all kinds of flack ranging from dubious to total Wackyland, was egged on at every turn by some of the biggest piles of crap in the industry (that a slime-encrusted hack like Alan Shipnuck ever made one penny at ESPN is an outrage), had every misstep blown up 9,999,999 times, and was directly in the firing line of the most devastating universe-destroying invincible engine of absolute destruction the sport has ever seen from day one…and still managed to not only survive but carve a place in history…I identified with him in a way I couldn’t with any athlete before or since.
Of course, the reason I can’t watch now is having to hear “GEDDINDAHOOHH!!!” roughly 500 times every single damn round, way too much cheering, and all those chants. No. Save your excuses. I have a dozen entertainment options at my fingertips that do not require getting my eardrums blasted into fragments for four freaking hours. On a more general note, what are the big stories right now? We’re not seeing anyone shooting for a record, making a brave final stand before being relegated to the Champions Tour, stirring up controversy, heck, even that big squabble with LIV seems to have fizzled out. (That tour, I recently discovered, has every bit as much “GEEEDDDDINDAAAAAHOOOOOHHHHHHHHH!!!” bullcrap, so it’s not an alternative.) The whole sport is basically just cranking along, and that’s not going to generate a lot of interest here.
I was pretty big fan of Lefty as well. Got old, tho, when he broke my heart down the stretch a few too many times. Folk used to talk about FIGJAM and how hated he was. But he sure seemed to smile and interact with fans about a million times more than Tiger. (That is, before Tiger felt the need to rehabilitate his image…)
On one hand, I often wonder why the courses do not toss those morons. On the other, however, I wonder that other sports don’t need to be held in complete silence.
Like I said, DJ was my latest favorite. When he and others went to LIV, it just split my interest. SO many of the younger players lack much personality. I mean, Scottie Scheffler? Great golfer, but pure vanilla to the core.
