A “boat” in Navy lingo is a sub, or a small passenger vessel. Here’s an easy memory aid: Boats can be placed on ships, ships can not be placed on boats. The reason subs are called boats is because they were originally built by “electric boat companies.”
I actually thought the "boat’ which apeared in my profile was a slam rather than a faux pas.
