I strongly advise you to refer to the handy tourist pouch thingy as a “bum bag”, not a “fanny pack”.

SmoothOperator: Just give me an email address Sarah and I’ll send you an mp3 of me singing if you want to do that to yourself. Alternatively I could record some prose/spoken word. Any requests?
Some vague tips off the top of my head…
If you attempt to speak Strine (Australian) then you need to remember that (a) g’day is pronounced quickly and with no vowel between the g and d; (b) we’re very lazy with our speech and pronounce our s’s as z’s (which is why we pronounce it Auzzie and an American stands out because he pronounces the s); (c) we abbreviate as many words as can (barbie, arvo etc.) When in doubt, cut it in half and add “ie.” We also speak a bit faster than Americans so be patient.
Probably the best advice I can give you tho is to be polite and avoid being loud. Loud americans aren’t liked. Just tolerated (usually). Polite americans are good value though.
Don’t be too sensitive. Australians are sarcastic and mischevious. They may make fun of you. It may sound odd but this is actually a good sign though. If we didn’t like you we wouldn’t talk to you at all.
Try a meat pie. Try and see a Rugby League and/or an Aussie Rules match (both available in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne).
Kangaroos do NOT hop down main streets.
Watch out for drop bears though - they can be everywhere.
Damn drop bears . . .maybe you could import some rabits orr something to keep them in control.
I shouldn’t have any troubles on either the “loud American” front or the “sarcastic” front – the first is anthema to me and the second is a way of life.
Thanks for the tips – I’ve watched Auzzie rules football on espn2 and would love to see a game in person.
hehe I don’t know if you’re familiar with our rabbit history but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt (cos that makes that comment incredibly clever and funny).
Give a call if you get up to Brisbane guys.
