If you believe this auction, Simpsons creator Matt Groening isn’t the artist we thought he was. Either that, or the attack on September 11, 2002 (you read that right) made him lose his drawing ability.
This drawing of the “Simpons” is ridiculous and an obvious joke. I especially like the picture of the drawing next to a Simpsons DVD, as if to say, “This is Matt’s, see?” I especially like the two towers talking to each other.
Ummm, you are aware that Matt Groening didn’t actually draw much of the Simpsons’ animation? I don’t actually know whether he animated any of the Simpsons (though the Tracy Ullman shorts may have been his). He simply came up with the characters and stuff. Check out his Life in Hell strip to see his style and skill. Anther thing to bear in mind is that most rough character sketches, which these seem to be, are not very polished. Sure, better-trained artists will turn out much cleaner looking crawings, but Groening is not, nor has he claimed to be, a highly trained artist. Nowadays, and for some time now, a Korean animation firm has been animating the Simpsons by following storyboards created by American artists.
God, I can’t imagine bidding that much money without any sort of authentication, and even the seller saying that ‘the origin of this picture is indeed dubious.’ Dubious, indeed.
Does anyone know if there’s any truth to the sellers claim that Matt Groening’s autographs are very rare? Does he not sign stuff? Or is that claim as dubious as the origins of the picture in question? The reason I ask is, I have a copy of his book “Childhood Is Hell” autographed by him. He drew a picture of a running Binky saying, “To David!”, and it’s signed by Groening and dated 11/17/88 (pre-Simpsons!). I couldn’t imagine it would be worth much, but if he really doesn’t sign stuff, maybe it’s worth a little bit more than I thought. Not that I’d get rid of it, anyway. Just curious.
"Tears rolling down his waxy, bearded face, he reached for his worn-down graphite pencil and began to draw. All the anxiety and sorrow he felt came pouring out of him in the two minutes it took him to draw this sketch. The smudges on the drawing are said to be caused by his tears. "
that’s good. it must be a genuine drawing.
i especially am amused by the “reserve has been met” part, since the original bid was under 5 bucks! i think that this one is more amusing than the “i will kick your ass” ebay thing. btw, is it still on ebay?
This is hilarious! Duuude, The Groenster! It’s an obvious joke, but how is this guy going to get out of paying the percentage of 10 mill that he’ll owe eBay after the auction closes?
I’ve got a copy of “Work Is Hell” that the Groenster signed by drawing a picture of an angry boss yelling, “Get back to work, Bob!” I had no idea it was worth $16,000,000, but digging through my storage space looking for it would take all day, so I think I’ll just go on being poor.
Groening drew the basic drawings for the Simpson characters and in the early Tracey Ullman shorts they were definately his style, but the character designs evolved over time to what we see now. Groening admits that the current look of the characters are beyond his ability to draw.
Ok, now it’s gone. But if it wasn’t and you clicked on it you would see that numerous bids were from “thisisobviouslyfake” and at least one from “matt_groening.” Both were brand new personas with zero reviews. Hmmmm.
