I’m buying a bed and mattress today or tomorrow; does anyone have a mattress brand/model that they would strongly recommend as being especially comfortable/durable/good quality? Price is moderately no object, since mattresses are one thing I’m okay spending some money on, but obviously I don’t want to break the bank if I don’t have to.
Thanks!
I recently bought a ‘memory foam’ mattress on ebay for £140 (around $280). It’s got to rank as one of the best purchases I’ve ever made.
I had fairly minor back pains through poor posture. These were gone after the first nights sleep.
The only word of warning I would give is that they are a lot firmer than I thought and if you prefer a soft mattress they probably wouldn’t suit you.
I’ve heard that memory foam mattresses tend to retain more body heat; is that true? I get a little bit sensitive to heat while I’m sleeping.
Three separate memory foam salesmen mentioned the heat retention when I was shopping for a mattress, without any prompting from me. Body heat is what causes the foam to reform around you.
I ended up buying a solid latex because of the heat retention (I tend to be a heat pump at night and might roast). I also got to custom order the firmness (I got extra very firm with a soft topper).
I really like it. It has the same solid, no bounce, total support features of the memory foam, without the heat factor. (That is, it doesn’t retain heat and it doesn’t require heat to mold around you.)
When you first lay on memory foam, it’s hard. As it warms up, it softens and molds itself to you. When you move to a different position, the whole process repeats. The latex just immediately cuddles up around you.
My SO, who splits nights between my solid latex and a solid memory foam, much prefers the latex.
On the other hand, my other SO loves the memory foam, as do some friends of ours that tried both mattresses before buying.
Obviously YMMV, but I strongly recommend trying out both types.
As far as cost - the TempurPedic memory foams are very expensive. We got a knockoff brand for about half the price, with a twenty year warranty.
The latex was a bit more than the knockoff but not nearly as much as the TempurPedic. I think it has a twenty year warranty, also. Both stores that I shopped latex at refused to combine latex with memory foam toppers, because the memory foam breaks down much faster.
Good luck on your quest!
I’ve never had a memory foam mattress, but I have the 2 inch memory foam topper which is very comfortable and does not seem to retain any significant body heat. Even just the 2 inch foam helped a lot with minor back and neck strains.
I have a TempurPedic mattress and I’ve always said that it was worth every penny. The things are amazingly comfortable and are basically immortal, assuming you don’t actually cut the bed in pieces. It may be really expensive, but you’ll never have to replace it. The one I have now is over 10 years old and it still looks basically new.
My parents moved from a full memory foam mattress to a “memory foam topper” style mattress and are very seriously considering switching back because of the difference in comfort.
In terms of body heat, I can’t really comment, the foam is firm enough that you don’t really “sink” into the bed, so I can’t imagine it’s much warmer than other kinds of beds. At least, I’ve never noticed much of a difference.
I bought a firm foam based mattress from Ikea.

I have had it for a few months and it seems very good. I am concerned with how long it will wear.
Just lying on a Tempurpedic makes me feel like I am in quicksand. Hate it.
I may get a memory foam topper for it though.
