Mazatlan - what to see, where to go, what to eat

I’ll be taking a much-needed break next week in the above-named city. I haven’t been there, and nobody I know has either (but they all want the details when I get back).

The guide books aren’t much help. Where they don’t flatly contradict each other (“Senor Frog’s is a must visit!” / “Senor Frog’s is stupid and played out!”), they fail to corroborate one another and don’t provide much justification for their suggestions.

Hence, this thread.

What shouldn’t be missed, and what can be skipped? What should be eaten, and what should be left on the plate? Where should things be bought, and where not?

I’m most interested in culture (not tourist stuff), food (from fine dining to local delicacies), and local life (walk-friendly neighborhoods), though if there’s anything else worth mentioning, please bring it on.

Anyone? <tap tap>

Been there, but it’s been about 14 years maybe? Senior Frog’s is great. Bora Boras is a must see: tons of booze, girls dancing on the bar!. I can’t remember going anywhere but those two places at night, and well into the morning. I remember a few good restaurants, but can’t for the life of me remember their names. There’s a market area downtown that you should go to, but be prepared to be majorly harassed “Special price today, just for you” ad infinitum.

It’s a really nice little city, with friendly locals and great beaches. You’ll be harassed on the beach too BTW, but simply saying “no, gracias” seems to work.

We’ve not been there but have been other places in Mexico…we tend to stay away from tourist places such as Senior Frogs (expensive) and hang out locally.

We’ve always gone by Tripadvisor as a guide to places to see…check out the forums.

We do hope to go there in the next few years, though. If you think of it, post a review in the next few days after returning.
