You’ve got a point in doubting everyone here, right? Or, y’all are just being a dick.
Yeah, figured.

Bullshit. Saying one decent thing after you’ve spent the last week trying to stir up as much shit as you could gets no props whatsoever. If he’s ashamed, he damn well should be. If he’s not, he can go to hell.
Doubt. Does a body good in these threads.
Ooh, ooh, it’s an Obama thread! We don’t have to provide cites for those! What are you, like bad and stuff???
If you have any reason to doubt this thread, it’s because you don’t pay attention to the news.
Now that you’ve been cited, anything constructive to submit?
Does anyone else find it odd that when a woman calls Obama an “Arab,” McCains’ response is “No, ma’am, he’s a decent family-man citzen…”
Uh, I think it’s good that McCain is “standing up” to this nonsense, but I know Arabs who are, in fact, decent “family-men citizens” themselves. The two are not mutually exclusive.
Constructive? To this thread?
Starting a thread and saying “at a rally today, someone said…” is bullshit.
I know what you mean, when I first heard that McCain actually showed a bit of character and crawled a few inches out of his shit-stained gutter of a smear campaign, I wanted a cite myself.
Fortunately, I actually spent a few seconds searching for cites and found them easily, before making an ignorant post assuming there were none.
I begin to wonder, if at any point, the Secret Service decided that they needed to step in and quietly “have a chat” with the McCain campaign about how they were potentially inciting riots and encouraging threats against someone they were protecting, someone that may become President.
I’m sure this all has to be somewhat alarming to them in looking at the long term protection scenario for President Obama. Noting that IT IS THEIR JOB to consider such scenarios for both major candidates.
It’s true that a cite should have been included in the OP. However, it’s not uncommone for them to be lacking even in a thread complaining about a fellow Doper. Given that’s an occasional occurence, I’d think the proper thing would now be to address the particulars rather than the unfortunate ommission.
And I think that it’s good for Obama that McCain has somewhat said to reign it in, whether sincere or not. Perhaps there’ll be less violence directed toward him if the party that seems to endorse it now pulls back from it.
OK, so you don’t pay attention to the news, and thus, quite appropriately, asked for a cite. You got it.
Do you have anything to say about McCain’s action?
'Cause, frankly, otherwise it just seems to me that your only purpose in this thread is to imply that Obama supporters are liars, which, quite demonstratably, we are not.
In this case.
But I’m not convinced that McCain was really trying to stir up shit on the level of people genuinely believing that Obama is an Arab and/or terrorist. Trying to stir up lots of shit encouraging mistrust of Obama in general, sure. But actually trying to turn his supporters into paranoid delusional hate mobs—no, I’m not sure that McCain seriously intended to call that monster to life. I could be wrong, of course.
That’s what I took out of it, and I think it’s really sad that people aren’t all over him for this. Are there any other ethnicities we can contrast to “decent family man”?
matt_mcl, at least the posters on YouTube did notice that McCain still found a way to stick his foot in the mouth:
I think you are… well, kind of. More accurately, I think McCain that’s where McCain allowed his campaign to go. I think he let it go well past the point where any reasonable person should have realized what he’d done, and then let it go another day or two before he said or did anything about it. And I have little (read: no) confidence that the campaign is actually going to back down from the shit stirring at this point.
McCain corrected one supporter one time… I think I’ll wait to see if his campaign changes its done before I think any more of him.
This incident today is all well and good and nice to see, but I think he needs to follow it up by putting a gag on Palin. If she continues to incite the mobs, then McCain’s sincerity will be severely compromised. His own campaign – particularly his running mate – is responsible for ginning up this hatred in the first place. He can’t have it both ways. Either he truly believes Obama is a decent person or he doesn’t. If he believes it, then his entire campaign needs to reflect that. If it does not begin to reflect that, it shows that McCain is either unable to effectively lead his own campaign, or doesn’t really mean what he says. The proof will be in the Palin.
I looked up “Arab,” because the way this woman was so concerned, I was sure it was another name for pirate or some other kind of cutthroat. Turns out an Arab is a person who comes from the Arabian peninsula. I don’t know much about this “Arabian peninsula” but apparently the people there are not decent or family men because it certainly seems to concern this folk an awful lot that Obama might be an Arab.
I’m glad McCain cleared it up thought that Obama is NOT an Arab.
It would have been extremely rewarding if the woman forgot her script and actually let out an appropriate Freudian slip: “I read that – I heard that Obama is a black man. He’s black, isn’t he?”
“No, he’s not black. He’s a decent, family – Black? Black? You were supposed to say Arab.”
What, you didn’t understand the word “droves”?
Bryan Ekers is from Montreal. Quebec. Canada.
I was riffing off askeptic’s remark to assume that if he was right, people from Quebec would now support McCain.
A further, and - I hope - subtle reference was to the BQ, the political party in Quebec which . . . y’know, never mind . . .
“It was a . . . I SAY . . . it was a joke, son.”
So maybe he’s just been dabbling with the mob mentality? I’m not sure that says anything better about him.
The thing that got me about the exchange is note that right after or during McCain taking the microphone back she confusingly says “No…?” Like, wait, I wasn’t supposed to say that? She genuinely didn’t get that she was a fucking idiot by saying that.
ETA: Someone please give her a tax break to buy a brush. That was some nappy ass hair.
