McCain liked the new guy, thought he was a serious reformer(he talked like one), and figured he’d take him under his win.

Translation: McCain thought, if he pulled his “Aw, shucks, i’m an amiable war-hero” bullshit on Obama, that Obama would roll over, break out the lube, and tell him to go to town. John McCain is, and always has been, bipartisan and reasonable right up to the moment that someone won’t do exactly what John McCain wants.

In this particular case, Obama folded up like a lawn chair(in Lindsey Graham’s words) because the Democratic leadership didn’t want him working with McCain.
