That is being discontinued, if it hasn’t already.
I thought that was mentioned in the OP, or maybe just alluded to.
Every time they add burgers like that, they take them away after a limited time. The Angus deluxe transitioned into the 4 different 1/4-pounder options, and now they are going back to the old regular quarterpounder with cheese only.

Shit, I shouldn’t have read this thread; now I want a Big Mac. McPica strikes again!
The old regular quarterpounder with cheese? Youngster. The old regular quarterpounder, like the old regular hamburger, didn’t have cheese unless you ordered that option.
You know what they call it in France?
Man, you people take your tomatoes seriously. As far as I’m concerned, the Big Mac is McDonalds’s version of the Whopper.
If this comes off as threadshitting, I apologize. And I’ve never been to Wendy’s or … Jack in the Box?, so I don’t know what those sandwiches are, but don’t most people think of the Big Mac and the Whopper as equivalent?
Lets see… the Big Mac is two small patties on a three piece bun… the Whopper is one large patty on a standard bun. Big Mac comes with cheese… standard Whopper doesn’t. Big mac uses shredded lettuce and reconstituted onion bits… Whopper uses full pieces of lettuce and sliced raw onion. Big Mac patties are fried… Whopper is flame broiled. Big Mac has Special Sauce… Whopper has Mayo. Big Mac has no tomato… Whopper does.
Equivalent only in that they are the flagship big burger at each place.
I ordered a Daily Double about a month ago; it was still on that restaurant’s menu board. They had to get the manager over to help the kid running the register; he said no one ever orders it and they had a hard time finding it on the keypad. Then I heard the kitchen workers yell out “What’s on a Daily Double?” and the manager had to go help them next. But they did get it right; the manager said it’s probably the best thing they have on the menu.
Marry me, please.
I also don’t want a feckin’ salad on my burger/sandwich.
Yeah, that’s the only way I see them as equivalent. Also, the Whopper, like all BK burgers, are “flame grilled” or whatever it is these days. (ETA: whoops, I see you mentioned it) For example, I like Big Macs, I don’t like Whoppers. I know more people who are the other way around. They are not really equivalent, and I don’t think most people consider them such.
Burger King also has a “Big King” now which is designed to be an equivalent to the Big Mac. I’m not sure how wise a decision it is: Someone who wants a Big Mac is just going to go to McDonald’s in the first place. I suppose it might get them some business from groups of people who can’t agree on where to go.
I like them both in their own way about the same. Sometimes I get an urge for a specific flavor combination and if that urge is for a Big Mac a Whopper won’t satisfy it and vice versa.
(bolding mine)
I’ve never had any of those toppings on a Wendy’s single. Isn’t part of the point of Wendy’s that you customize the toppings? Or is there a “standard” single I’ve never known about? (The only thing close to standard I’ve encountered is that I always have to specifically say “no cheese”: if I don’t, I wind up with cheese about half the time.)
One of the reasons I like Wendy’s burgers best is that their toppings always taste fresh. Burger King’s toppings seem like the came out of a shoebox in a basement. McDonald’s taste like they were rehydrated in a lab. Wendy’s actually taste like vegetables.
Yep. Then they figured out that instead of adding cheese for an extra charge, they could make more money by putting cheese on almost every sandwich and setting a higher base price, and then removing the cheese for those customers that don’t want cheese while still charging the higher price.
And then they figured out that they could cut the slice of cheese in half (I’m looking at you, filet-o-fish sandwich) since, Kraft singles aside, a “slice of cheese” is a loosely-defined concept.
Likewise, Carl’s Jr. has the Big Carl, and Jack in the Box has the Bonus Jack as a limited time item every now and then.
That’s what triggered my question. The Deluxe Quarter Pounderlooks like the cheeseburger you would get in every other restaurant, but for McDonald’s it’s just another failure.
Because if you can get it at “every other restaurant” why would you make a trip to McDonald’s. I can only get a real Big Mac or a real Quarter Pounder with Cheese there.
There are lots of burger choices… sounds like you prefer the type they don’t sell. No big deal. Several have clearly stated that they don’t want “salad” on their burger… you do. My favorite fast food burger doesn’t involve LT or O. Even when I make them at home I’m happy with simple ketchup and mustard.
Also, not sure it is a failure… they are cutting their menu to make it more simple to see everything they have without being overwhelming. When you sell a hundred different kinds of burgers some have to be less popular than the others. They probably still made more money from them than you or I will ever make in our lifetimes.
Hey, I’m 35. I was just talking about stuff during my lifetime, or at least recent memory. The Quarter-pounder “with cheese” has been a featured default menu item for as long as I can remember. My use of “old” was only to distinguish from the recent “premium” menu additions/experiments.
