Mead drink of the gods

Mead.
Ever tried it?
Ever made (brewed)it ?
Is it available at the liquor store?
What flavor is best?
I stumbled upon a website last night and realized I’ve never tried it .
There are a lot of things I haven’t tried but a liquor touted as “drink of the gods”. Gee where did I go wrong?

There was a thread a few months ago. Mead, the official beverage of the plague years

Thanks bibliophage
I missed that when I searched.Didn’t look far enough back I guess.

Now where can I get 15lbs of honey cheap.

With all respects to the Vikings and Beowulf mead must be an acquired taste. The nearest thing I can compare this stuff to is a sweet cough syrup with an alcohol kick.
Please notice that when other drinks arrived on the scene mead passed into history.

I enjoyed it without being overcome with a need to rush out and buy a crate.

I had been warned it had a very marked kick but drank over a dozen without much effect. Nice taste though.

There is nothing worse than bad mead. Not even Brew 152. I’m in the SCA, and a lot of people make a lot of mead. if you want pretty good mead, try “Chaucers”, available in better-stocked stores.

My wife brews her own mead every year. There are a LOT of possible variations, and, while bad mead is VERY bad, good mead can be very, very good. We take bottles to friends when invited over for dinner, and it’s generally appreciated.

I’ve found that some commercial “mead” isn’t really mead at all. That is, it’s not a fermented honey beverage, but simply white wine with honey added well after fermentation.

There are plenty of books on making mead and on the variations. Go to any store that sells winemaking and beer making supplies.

“Tell Zeno I’m willing to meet him halfway.”

The factual elements of this question having been answered in the thread Bibliophage referenced, I will move this thread to In My Humble Opinion, where people can relive their experiences with mead, which is indeed the drink of the Gods.

you can find info on mead here

It is evidentally quite the versatile beverage.

By the way ,I looked mead up in Websters and they said malt is used in brewing it.Incorrect from the information in these sites.

I’ve tried it. Chaucer’s is excellent.

I have yet to brew my own, but I will someday. I have gotten lots of recipes off the 'Net, and from other sources. The SCA site is a good source, because they take their accuracy quite seriously. This one is good also:

Some people don’t give enough details. Be careful with an inexact recipe, if you don’t know what you’re doing fermenting things can go boom.
