Measured Mile?

While traveling through New England recently, I saw several sections of road in Rhode Island and Connecticut marked as “measured miles” with signs indicating the beginning and end of the measured mile.

What was that all about? Is a New England mile different than a Mid-Atlantic mile? I’ve never seen signs like this before.

It’s used to check your odometer. You make note of the reading at the start of the measured mile, and see if it goes one mile exactly by the end.

You can also use it to calibrate your speedometer: keep the speed at 30 mph and see if it takes two minutes to go the distance.
