A succession of stupid injuries has had me taking advil - 1-2 a day - for the last year. I happen to have run out of my supply once or twice and ended up with a major headache. Well, it’s happened again. I’m out of Advil and my head is blowing up on me. Is this all a coincidence or has any one else here suffered headaches after missing their daily advil dose.
I still need some sort of antiinflammatory for my injuries but I’m starting to think I should refrain from taking any more advil.
Rebound headaches are a real possibility after chronic use of advil or other NSAIDs. Though what you’re using is rather on the low end to be causing it. It’s still possible though.
One may be better off using a long-acting NSAID like piroxicam or meloxicam, if one truly needs ananti-inflammatory effect. Use tylenol for headaches.
But there’s some evidence that one can get rebound from tylenol too, so use the lowest dosage necessary to control the pain.
At least that’s my generic observation based on general treatment principles; not intended to be specific advice for YOU.
Thanks for the infos, Qadgop! I didn’t realize that rebound headaches were possible. I guess I’ll ask my doctor if he thinks I should switch to the two drugs you’ve mentioned. I think I do want the anti-inflamatory (I have a tiny broken bone in my left foot and a stress fracture in my upper tibia). I can tell the difference when I’m not taking Alleve or Ibuprofen. But we’ll see. As long as I’m not permanently torquing my brain up, maybe it would be ok to stay on them.
Long term daily use of acetaminophen (Tylenol) has been reported to cause liver damage.
Generally only when consumed in excess of 3 grams a day, usually along with regular alcohol intake.
In recommended doses, it’s far safer than NSAIDs which cause lots of morbidity and mortality due to causing significant bleeding, even when taken in moderation.
