There is a function in iTunes called “show duplicate songs,” which will scan your library and come up with what it thinks are duplicates – however, it doesn’t always catch them all and some of the ones it catches aren’t. Despite that, it’s pretty easy to open up iTunes and search your library by artist, arrange the songs alphabetically by title (or playing time) and catch them there.
Yeah, I wouldn’t trust the Show Duplicate Songs function. It only looks at title and artists, not filesize or any other characteristics, so depending on how you name your files, live versions and remixes could be lumped together with the original track. When you put a CD into your computer to rip it, iTunes will let you check and uncheck the individual tracks to rip (default is all checked).
For the future, or in case anyone else is wondering, Apple is having great sales on their refurbished ipods . You can get the 30GB Color iPod for $149.
Ok, how do I stop iTunes from automatically importing the CD I put into the drive? I want to look at the list, listen a bit to some tracks, and uncheck things I don’t want before the import starts.
Go to Preferences, click on the “Advanced” icon along the top. Then click on the “Importing” tab.
Where it says “ON CD Insert” change the popup menu to say “Show songs”
