Media that added to our culture

I’d say more people know “We don’t need no steekin badges!” from Blazing Saddles.

Would you believe that Get Smart added hundreds of catch phrases to the language? OK, would you believe dozens?

And you can bet your bippy that Rowan and Martin’s Laugh In contributed a few.

I wouldn’t. People were saying that long before 1974, when Blazing Saddles came out. The scene with the bandits in Treasure has become so iconic.

Also, De Niro didn’t say, “I’m the only one here, so you must be talkin’ to me,” in Taxi Driver but I’ll give them a pass on that, because the real line is “R” rated.

“I’m the only one here…who the fuck do you think you’re talkin’ to?”

Steve Rogers agrees with you.

“I got that reference!”

“It’s a Wonderful Life” essentially created the trope of wishing so and so had never been born.

Bite my shiny metal ass!

Party On!

One Million Dollars.

“Thou hast seen nothing yet” – Don Quixote

Not to mention, “Play it once, Sam, for old times sake.”

However, I wouldn’t regard these as errors as rather the conversion of what were once quotes into catchphrases. They distill the essence of the quote into a pithier form, and one that makes more sense as an isolated phrase than the original line of dialogue.

Monty Python is probably near the top of the list.

The Princess Bride has also heavily influenced geek culture.

No it isn’t.

There’s more to an argument than just saying “no it isn’t”!

Nonsense!

In a world…

And “hasta la vista, baby”. Or “sayonara, baby”, if your reference is the Spanish version.

Going for much, much older material, both the fable writers (Aesopus isn’t exactly modern) and 18th-19th century folklorists (such as the Brothers Grimm or Charles Perrault) added a lot of phrases to international vocabulary.

I think (but can’t prove) that it may go deeper than that, somewhat reviving a cultural memory of the true meaning of the holiday, i.e. from before Christianity got hold of it and turned it into a fake birthday party.

FWIW
…I have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.”

I think that one’s all the delivery.

Even if you’ve never seen Scarface (and I never have), I’m willing to bet you’ve used the line “Say hello to my little friend!” at least once in your life.

And automatically did your best and/or worst Tony Montana impression while doing so. Go ahead, try and imagine that line delivered by any other voice. It can’t be done.

Red pill? I have no idea what you are talking about. Really.

(But I bet you know Dorothy and Toto’s home state, don’t you? )
