medical question, can anyone help? Kind of yucky

Okay, I don’t know what is happening to me, but I have been getting these “obstructions” in my throat and coughing them up. No, they aren’t hairballs! LOL Seriously though, the best way I can describe these formations is they are kind of like half cooked barley. They are whitish in color and are firm. I have been coughing them up for about 4 to 6 weeks now. What the hell is it? I don’t think it is an infection, I have no other syptoms of any kind. I can feel them when they get “ripe” and have to almost gag myself to expel them sometimes. Whatever they are, they are nasty. Brushing regularly and gargling with Listerine does nothing to stop this. Sometimes they make swallowing difficult if I can’t get rid of them immediately. Am I going to die? Am I an X File? Help!!!

Do they stink to high heaven?

Yes, it’s an infection. Those things are little, hard pus balls that are growing in your throat. Usually they are accompanied by a sore throat, but not always. You’ve been neglecting them too long. It doesn’t sound like they are going away by themselves. Probably should see a doctor.

I’ve had that before, it sucks. Unfortunately, there’s not much I can tell you. I never went to a doctor and nobody had any idea what it was. Eventually it just went away.

Get thyself to a doctor! If you are having difficulty “coughing them up” ie in the medical language we call that maintaining an open airway. It could be and most likely is something simple and easy to fix. But if you get one and can’t clear your airway then…in four to six minutes your brain starts to die after ten minutes there little hope! Btw the average response time for an ambulance is from 8 minutes to 13 minutes!

I’ve had those things forever. I don’t exactly cough them up; they don’t obstruct my breathing in any way. You feel them at the back of your throat, and sort of push them out by forcing air in that direction. It only happens every once in a while. For some reason, I’ve always associated them with my tonsils, but I have no medical verification on that. I’ve never been to the doctor, as the little things come so infrequently, and I’ve never had any accompanying symptoms, like a sore throat or fever. But if that changed, I’d definitely see a doctor.

I agree with Mr Bear. You really should go to the doctor. Hopefully it is nothing, but it is better to be safe than sorry. Good luck and I hope nothing is seriuosly wrong.

I’ve had them ever since a bout with TB
about 20 years ago. Mine tend to be about
the size of a tooth. I’ve had a few anxious
minutes when they wouldn’t expell, but
never died from it.

Seriously? This is “run to a doctor” type stuff?

A girlfriend in college mentioned this to me once, said it was like she was coughing up tiny cauliflower florets. Maybe it was power of suggestion, but not long after I also had one. I used to think I was coughing it up from a lung but have since realized that it seems to drop off of my upper throat and hit my back tongue. Smells like the devil when crushed. But doesn’t happen often.

Seriously, I just figured it was, I dunno, like the fuzz on your tongue. Hardened pus balls?!?

Get next to a mirror & look in your mouth to the back. How do things look? Strange, but a lot of people miss this important step.

It sounds like more of a tonsil problem. When the tonsils get infected, they produce ‘objects’ much like the ones you’re describing. Because of the location of the tonsils, these objects could easily slip down your throat and cause the coughing.

Still, it wouldn’t hurt to have a doctor check it out though.

Now that’s a great name for a band!!
