Medical Question - Probably TMI (Post Kidney Stone..)

Apologies, this is long. (No pun intended.)

So, a week ago - Monday morning, about 12:30AM - I was sitting at the computer, and I leaned forward, and noticed a peculiar sensation. Slightly painful. It felt like there was a tiny pineapple stuck in my urethra. Surprised, I immediately leaned back.

I am, however, a compulsive when it comes to investigating such things (it is very fortunate for me that ‘If you pick at it, it will never heal’ is not literally true) - so I leaned forward again, trying to find the angle, getting a feel for exactly what the sensation was, how intense the discomfort was. Shifted my seating angle, et cetera.

I concluded that there was something, likely a kidney stone, in my urethra. A quick trip to google suggested that stone passage is facilitated by water, so I had some water, and awaited the usual results. With the urine, came blood.

Now, I have some mild hypochondriac tendencies, so I knew I wouldn’t get a good night’s sleep until I had this run by a medical professional. So I drove myself to the ER. A good night’s sleep wasn’t in the cards, as it turned out - I didn’t get out of the ER until after 4AM, though they didn’t seem particularly busy…

They took my temperature, did urinalysis, and a CT scan. They said they was no sign of a UTI, nor signs of other stones in my kidneys or bladder, so whatever it was had passed. They said I should follow up with my doctor in a few days.

So over the course of last week, the blood (mostly clots, except for a tiny discharge after the morning pee) became less pronounced, and I last saw any sign of it Friday morning. Friday evening, I went to my general physician and had another urinalysis, and he went over the CT Scan results with me more specifically. There was no blood in my urine that they could detect, and he concurred with my thought - I had a stone, it passed, and it did some damage on the way out. (Probably because of my efforts in trying to figure out what the hell it was, no doubt.)

So. One week from the initial injury, one symptom remains. A burning sensation when I pee - sometimes. Actually, it almost exclusively happens with the first urination of the day. I understand that’s when the urine is most concentrated and acidic, so what I assume is happening is that the urine is irritating the freshly-healed inside of my urethra. What I’d like to know, from the fine medical minds of the SDMB, is how long I can expect that to continue, because that sucks.

I have considered the possibility that there’s a follow-on UTI, but no fever, no flank pain, no unusual smell, no discoloration in the urine - I am watchful for any of these symptoms and would certainly head back to the doctor for antibiotics if they cropped up. Plus the urinalysis was clean as of Friday.

So, how long till I can go back to peeing without wondering if its going to sting?

Addendum : Anecdotes from folks who went through similar trauma are welcome and may be helpful as well.

FWIW: I don’t get the classic symptoms of UTI’s. If I have one I generally find out from a urinanalysis.

Also, in my experience, passing a stone feels like what a tough labor must feel like. And they say it’s worse for men.*

*I like to think of that little factoid as women’s revenge.

Well, now I’m having some mild back pain, and a touch of queasiness, so perhaps there is a follow-on UTI. I will call my doctor for advice … nowish.

He thinks the back pain, as described, is muscular or skeletal - and I think the queasiness is just gas from the air I’ve been gulping down along with water…

I passed my first kidney stones a few months ago. What a strange experience, absolutely pain free. I was surprised by this as kidney stones sent both my Father and my best friend to the hospital in pain. The only real indication I had that I was passing one was the burning sensation you described and a pricking sensation (no pun) as the stone made the 9" journey to get out!

I was very surprised at the lack of pain, either I had a very small and smooth stone or the fact that I am on morphine everyday masked any pain.

The burning seemed to last about three days after I phased the stone, so take that FWIW. Also, I had the sensation that I always had to urinate, even after I just went it felt like there was always more that I couldn’t discharge. That seem to last a couple of days after I phased the stone as well.

Well, my burning has ceased, it seems - two mornings free, at least. So I suppose the question is moot, now.

And on the other hand - I did develop a UTI. It’s not so bad, but the antibiotics are kicking my ass. Or my stomach, specifically. Geez.

Sorry to hear about your UTI. Hopefully you can cheer yourself with the thought that at least you’re a man. If you were a woman, you’d probably get a yeast infection after the antibiotics. :frowning:

Ouch, sorry to hear about the UTI, but glad you paid attention and got both it and the stone taken care of. If you were still having pain, I was going to suggest asking the pharmacist for that little purple pill that they give women for UTIs, without which we’d be in the hospital, strapped down as they forced a catheter in, 'cause no one is gonna be able to pee through that pain, ugh. Glad yours wasn’t TOO long.

The UTI symptoms weren’t that big a deal, compared to the Bactrim side-effect. I got them to switch me to Cipro, which wasn’t as bad, but I basically had no appetite from Sunday evening to yesterday evening, thanks to Bactrim and the crippling nausea it gave me. My stomach still doesn’t quite feel ‘normal’, but it’s liveable.

It’d be cheerier if it didn’t make me think that I’m now permanently predisposed to getting kidney stones / UTIs on a recurring basis. I mean, I hope they were both (connected) flukes, but..
