I don’t really know much about them, other than the fact that they exist.
What is the procedure for medically inducing a coma? What about for trrminating the coma and permitting a return to consciousness? How long can it be maintained safely? What are the risks?
Hippocratic oath issues aside, is it possible to put a subject into one just for the hell of it?
I got 5,700,000 hits.
“A barbiturate-induced coma, or barb coma, is a temporary coma (a deep state of unconsciousness) brought on by a controlled dose of a barbiturate drug, usually pentobarbital or thiopental.

The artificial comas I’ve been involved with were usually induced with propofol and switched over to other drugs, usually midazolam, after 48 to 72 hours, if the patient still needed full sedation.
It seems like an “induced coma” is basically what happens every time you get put under general anesthesia for surgery, isn’t it? Just a really short coma.
Perhaps the closest thing to “just for the hell of it” that I’ve actually heard of being done is the Ultra-Rapid Opioid Detox treatment, where they induce a coma for 48-72 hours and also dose the patient with opioid antagonists. This is supposed to get heroin addicts past the most unpleasant parts of acute withdrawal symptoms without them having to actually suffer them. It doesn’t seem to be generally held in high regard.
I had an idea for a weight-loss scheme where you’d get put into a coma for a few weeks with no food so that the fat would melt off with no hunger or pain, but nobody seemed interested in testing it out for me.
The problem is muscle tissue also melts right off.
Perfect! That means you lose even MORE weight!
(I hope it’s obvious that this post, as well as the original idea, is being offered with tongue firmly in cheek.)
