During the world wars, were there any documented cases of priests or medics being spared from getting killed in combat or possibly being released after capture or allowed to continue their craft when captured?
Apparently, like anything, it depended heavily on the exact theater and the war. Sometimes those red crosses were used as an aim marker, and sometimes the enemy respected the medics going to recover the wounded. Ditto with priests.
The scuttlebutt around the barracks in the recent round of wars was that red armband was just giving the enemy something to aim for, since guerilla fighters/terrorists have no respect whatsoever for the laws of war. Not sure how they felt about infidel priests but I suspect it wasn’t much better.
I find myself fascinated by some passes of civility and humanity even during combat. I did wonder if a cross on a medics are was just a crosshair guide, too. Any more replies are heartily welcome by all. Thanks!
