When I look at the stars at night and see the The Pleiades and Taurus, I focus on the brightest star of The Bull*, Aldebaran, and thoughts of a doper, half a world away, is furiously typing up some pretty wild comparisons, such being stalked by a “kettle” by the name of Mehitabel, who is chasing the “pot” who has also been “following” the seven sisters for millenia. Coincidence?

No, that is only speculation based on the false premise that we can actually know what someone else’s motives are.
As long as SDMB permits, anyone is free to criticize the United States without revealing his location. We don’t have to reveal ours either. That seems fair to me. I think that the States can bear scrutiny and we can certainly use the feedback. Meanwhile, it doesn’t hurt those who live in other countries to get the straight dope from Americans on how we see things. Aldebaran has certainly asked for explanations frequently.
I am rather sensitive to feminist issues and I haven’t noticed that Aldebaran singles out females at all. Someone else’s use of the expression “to a man” made me bristle a little.
I agree with Rysler and Zombies and I hope the mods put an end to harassment about anyone’s location. Especially since indirect references to use of the Ingnore Function have been brought up twice by Mehitabel in this thread, maybe someone will take note of what would usually be considered jerkish behavior.
But I will admit to a bias in favor of Aldebaran. His posts are never dull.
It’s extremely fair. However, the reason why Alde’s location has been such a hot topic is because it’s part of his greater scheme of one-sided, bad-faith behavior in GD threads. He’s made claims which would require an understanding of nuances of the U.S. political scene that many Americans don’t have, but not only won’t tell us whether or not he’s ever visited the U.S., he won’t say where he’s getting news and information reports so that anyone might establish their opinion whether or not his sources are sufficient for him to make the claims and conclusions that he’s made.
This, coupled with his “my post is my cite” attitude and refusal to substantiate or even attempt to validate many of the claims that he’s made, his frequent obfuscating responses or outright refusal to engage those who directly counter or question what he’s said) only deepen the annoyance at his repeated stereotypes and generalizations of Americans and the state of the U.S.
Yes, and then he argues with the people who have provided them when they do not match his presumptions. That’s why Alde threads frequently turn into multiple-page trainwrecks.
This I’ll agree with. Aldebaran has, if nothing else, always struck me as an equal-opportunity stereotyper, painting both men and women – so long as they’re “USers” with equally broad brush strokes of generalization.

Why would you want to continue to debate him? You know how it will go, and you’ll just add to his already quite well-developed martyr complex. Give him what he says he wants-- no further contact with you-- and let other people get into with him. In the end, if he’s as bad as you say he is, he’ll be hoisted on his own petard, and THEN you will “win.” IMO, engaging someone like this on his level vindicates him because you’re no better than he is. Just walk away.

OK, OK, I wrote my previous post in a huge hurry because Debbie decided to reply about ten minutes before I had to leave for work. I wish I could take most of it back. I was just feeling cocky because I thought that I had asked him very reasonably for a little self-examination and he obviously hadn’t even read it.
I maintain that it’s unfair that I should have to alter MY behavior and make several threads, the ones that he posts in time and again as he hijacks them, incomprehensible to me. But life is unfair, I guess. Like I said last year, he reminds me of a homeless guy who would call the government information office where I worked and demanded all sorts of help with jobs, housing, etc. and then tell us all they wouldn’t work for him but not tell us why. Then he’d start in on us, saying we were all middle-class and privileged and racist, etc. etc. and were refusing to help him because we were out to get him. He wasted hours of our time and lots of taxpayer dollars before we were given permission to just hang up on him (we were not allowed to hang up on a citizen even if they started cursing at us).
Well, sometimes I still feel like I have that phone in my hand when I was 23 years old, biting back laughter and frustration. Just hanging up without giving the guy a piece of my mind or trying to persuade him to listen to us and / or stop crank-calling is something it’s very annoying for me to do. But I guess I will.
Please, please, people, don’t engage Debbie anymore if he’s going to keep being like that. I can’t force you to do anything. I don’t give ultimatums. But he managed to get Dex mad at him within a week of signing up and I’ve realized that he’s not going to listen to any criticism or ever change.

Is there no point in telling me how I am a bigot? I take that charge seriously, believe it or not, coming from anyone. Misunderstandings can occur anywhere and this may well have been one, but when I call someone a bigot, I expect to have to back it the hell up with my reasons. I’ve seen many comments of yours in this thread alone that could be interpreted as having a bias against one group or another, but I have been cautious and not pointed them out because I realize I may just not be understanding you completely. You made the charge, back it up.
What do you usually do when you encounter someone without cites and reliable sources – especially if she or he presents stereotypes and generalizations? I have seen you, in particular, take the time to educate people. Just as you teach best when you are not pissed off, others learn best when they are not under fire.
I would think that Aldebaran forms a lot of his opinions about Americans by the way he is treated here. He has a lot of input. Maybe it’s better if we don’t base our opinions of his culture on just one or two people. Anyway, it’s his choice.

I offer my opinions, often investing a lot of feelings, but once I’ve done that, I have to let go of any expectation of the other person. Whether or not she or he changes is not my business. It’s not even my business what the other person thinks of me.
That was me, Zoe. I meant it as the phrase goes, not that I was a woman saying that only men need to learn and women don’t. That would really have been counter-productive to my argument. I suppose I could have changed the phrasing to ‘to a person’, but it doesn’t have the same ring. In any case, no bristling was intended or expected. I’m typically more than mindful of gender references in common usage. Hence, today I swerved to avoid a personhole cover half off its moorings on Grand River Ave. :rolleyes:
And my concern about Aldebaran’s possible misogyny sprang from his apparent use of Mehitabel’s femaleness to bolster his arguments against her, like the romance angle and other girls on the playground and whatnot. The only singling out I have noticed from him is his refusal to back up suggesting I’m a bigot.
