True, but… you don’t date O.J. and then act surprised when he gets insanely jealous. There’s no way that she couldn’t know he was a lunatic when she started dating him; there’s also no way she didn’t know he was one of the richest men in show business and the married father of seven kids. I also seriously doubt it was his charm and sweetness that attracted her: by all accounts he’s a chain smoking hard drinking narcissist. I don’t doubt he scared the shit out of her and she probably did think “Oh holy shit… he’s not nuts he’s NUTS!”, but I’ve also no doubts she’s a gold digger.
I could not have possibly imagined his level of his fury (and for seemingly no reason whatsoever) before hearing these tapes. I’m not sure there is a level of “pushing buttons/gold digging/instigating” that could possibly warrant that reaction. I’d be embarrassed if I even tried to defend Gibson on this, even purely as a devil’s advocate. That was surreal to listen to.
I can separate the person from the art (Orson Scott Card is among my favorite authors and I can’t agree with him on anything), but this is a different animal. I won’t support anything he does. I can’t.
I didn’t hear him admit to hitting her in the face and knocking her teeth out. I heard her say that, twice, and then I heard him make that boo hoo sound and say something like “now your scared”. Does he actually admit to it on the tape?
He also didn’t actually say “I’ll kill you”, although he did say something about she should have a bat taken to her head and putting her in the rose garden.
I’m not trying to be a Mel apologist… trust me. I’m just asking my questions from a legal POV.

That’s a very convenient thing about being a rich male in America, isn’t it. It automatically makes any woman you fuck into a golddigger, and any accusatation she makes suspect.
If she didn’t have the tapes, she’d be liar. Since she does have the tapes, she’s some kind of grifter. It’s basically a no win situation for her, even when he’s on tape admitting to abusing her and threatening to muder her. he’s rich, therefore she’s a golddigger. It’s an accusation that’s impossible to falsify. How can she possibly prove she’s NOT a golddigger? How very convenient for all rich men.

Yeah, you might have missed it because she was talking at the same time. After the “boo boo now you’re scared” part, he says “but you know what? you fucking deserved it!” at the same time she tries to say something.
I don’t believe they are married. Unless she can make an assault charge stick all she’s (objectively) going to get is some hefty CS for the baby. IIRC he’s going to (or is threatening to) charge her with extortion WRT threatening to release these tapes unless she got some sort of payoff.
Given his rage I have little trouble believing they got into it physically, but there isn’t anything concrete in the recording of his explicitly admitting that he did the assault. He alludes to it re “you deserved it”, but that a lawyer could possibly explain that away in saying she was referencing another altercation or blah, blah, blah. If the tapes can’t be admitted it’s going to be an uphill climb re proving anyting.

It’s amazing to think that South Park might have erred by portraying Gibson as more sane than he actually is.
“They” didn’t get into it physically. HE did. He punched her. There isn’t any “they.” Just him battering a woman.

But if she had her teeth knocked out, that certainly wouldn’t be hard to prove. I guess Mel could claim that it happened in some sort of accident, but between having physical evidence of being injured consistant with her story, her mentioning it in the tape and having Mel appear to, at best, not question her statement and finally the fact that he obviously sounds pretty serious about threatening future violence on her, well, I wouldn’t call that an uphill climb to prove abuse.
The “uphill climb” referred only to a scenario where the tapes are not admissible.
