I pronounce it ‘mee-lee’ when used as an adjetive- as in “Melee combat”. However, I pronounce it ‘may-lay’ when used as a noun- “A fierce melee erupted”

Having never, ever heard the word used in everyday conversation, I just assumed it’s pronounced ‘mee-lee’, as seen in the gaming world. How would I know? And how do I know about those that claim its ‘may-lay’ are correct? What can you say about the French?

I always pronounced it like it was spelled. Unless my memory has really gone (and it’s the first thing :D), it was spelled Reading Railroad.

We’ve been borrowing words from French since 1067, and 937 years ought to be long enough to get used to the fact that they spell things differently than English does – especially in Paghreeee and Mar-say. Not to mention Boar-doh or Reams, where they have that cathedral. Perhaps somebody from Kuh-Beck might be helpful.
It was a regional railroad that ran from Reading [pronounced “Redding”], Pennsylvania to Philadelphia. Either it ran to Atlantic City in the '30s or whatshisface (not Clarence Darrow…) ran out of railroad names and borrowed it.
Although the Reading Railroad is defunct, the terminal in Philly is still known as Reading Terminal. No trains now go to Reading Terminal, but the farmer’s market there, originally founded by Amish farmers from Lancaster County bringing their wares to the big city via train, is still thriving after more than a century of operation. Tourists – make sure you check it out, perhaps at lunchtime… That, BTW, is where the opening scene in Witness was shot.

Round here we pronouce it metal-ee. I guess…Thats how the guys says it when I hear it, so thats how I pronouce it.
Marylbone is pronounces " Luxury Yacht".

Dude, you REALLY don’t want to know how my friends and I used to say chimera. :smack:
I have a friend who mispronounces it mee-lee. Drives me nuts. I know it’s more like meh-lay, but my Southern American English means it comes out more like may-lay. But he mispronounces paladin as pa-LAD-in, which really drives me nuts.
I mispronounced chimera for years, until Mission: Impossible 2. I pronounced it with a hard “ch” and so it rhymed with shimmer-a. Always got lich wrong, too (hard “ch” instead of a “ck” sound.)
And there are still more pronucniation controversies in Dungeons and Dragons:
Is deity pronounced “dee’ it ee” or “day’ it ee?”
Is THAC0 pronounced “thack’ oh” or “thack’ ze**’** row?”
And how the fuck do you pronounce Baatezu and Ta’anari?
