If any other Dopers are sports card collectors, then you know that the latest rage in the hobby is “game-used” cards–ones that have a piece of a jersey, bat, stick, etc. on them. Now obviously they are made by taking said item and cutting them up into pieces and mounting them on the card.
My question is this–what do they do with the rest of it?
Your average card contains not even a square inch (usually) of whatever it is that’s on it. Obviously, a professional team jersey could be cut into thousands of these swatches. Yet, they usually make no more than a few hundred of the card, and some are even limited to less than 100 or even 50.
Does Upper Deck have a warehouse full of cut-up sports equipment?
What do players think about this trend? Are they bothered about their stuff getting cut up? I mean, it’s easy to take a broken bat or hockey stick and cut it up, but some of the stuff seems kinda special, like all-star game jerseys.
