Men: Do you own a suit?

I’m a girl but for the men in my life:

My husband owns one nice suit. He wore it at our wedding and wears it to job interviews (he’s a tech guy, so his jobs have all been of the nice-shirt-and-pants-but-no-tie variety).

My brother owns one suit and several sport-coat/pants ensembles.

My father owns one suit (which he only wears to weddings and funerals).

All three of my uncles own at least one suit.

13 of my 14 male cousins (over the age of 10) own at least one suit. The suit holdout does, however, own a nice shirt-pants-tie ensemble - just no jacket.

My husband’s male cousins each own at least one suit (I know this because we were discussing the topic at the last family gathering - unfortunately for a funeral and they were all universally relieved they already owned appropriate clothing that fit and looked okay). They number one college student, one businessman (started his own business) and one professional athlete.

Both of my husband’s uncles own at least one suit - including the uncle who is confined to a wheelchair and cannot actually wear a suit.

My husband’s stepfather owns at least one suit.

In fact, only one adult male member of either of our families does not own a suit.

I have two, which is a serious shortfall, since I have to wear a suit four days each week. I really need to buy more; problem is, I’m a difficult fit, so my suits tend to cost more, and money’s tight right now. I did recently invest in some new shirts, though, to expand my wardrobe a bit more.

I have three suits (and I know that two fit me), and they’re always ready to wear.

I’m at the age now where my friends’ parents are starting to pass away, so it’s comforting to know I can run home at no notice to change for a funeral or viewing, or have one ready on the very rare occasions I’ll need one for business.

I own three suits and I actually enjoy wearing them every once in a while. My wife thinks I look quite handsome in a suit, so there’s always that.

More than I need. I like suits and wish I had more opportunity to wear them–at least a shirt and tie.

I know, I’m weird.

Two suits – one black (funerals, evening events, interviews) and one tan (weddings, daytime events, interviews). I also have a sport coat for those semi-maybe-dunno-formal events.

The men who don’t own a suit – what do you do for interviews, if you’re still in the workforce? Is a suit for a corporate interview not the necessity that I’ve been led to belive?

I can only speak for myself, but working in HiTech (the local equivalent of Silicone Valley) in a country that doesn’t put much truck in dressing up anyway… I’d look seriously over-dressed if I showed up to an interview in a suit, or even in tie and jacket.

But again, I’m probably an outlier, and the question was probably more aimed at Americans to begin with.

Do clown suits count?

I guess I was thinking more about the US, but this is really interesting. It wouldn’t have occurred to me that Israel was a casual-dress place. I guess I never gave it much thought.

I have 3 or 4 suits, hand-me-downs from my dad. A couple are very nice. Trouble is his chest is/was apparently a bit smaller than mine so the vests are tight. And the pants waist as well. Since it’s 6 months or longer between times I need a suit, I usually try on 1 or 2 that I like before I find the one that fits me.

And I have a shortage of dress shirts to wear with the suit.

And I have one tie that I leave tied because I can’t tie a tie.

I only have to worry about this stuff for weddings (very rare) and funerals (somewhat rare.)

I have about a dozen, most from when my company used to have a business-only dress policy. Now we’re casual, so I really only need to wear a suit about 5 times a month. Since most of the dozen are older styles, my current rotation consists of 3 suits.

I own a brown one that I bought for our wedding party and use as a “presentation for school” suit and the occasional wedding, and a navy blue one that has become my interview-funeral-sometimes wedding suit.

No you’re not. I have all those suits I mentioned because I like wearing them and I have enough occaison to wear them socially (I’m almost 30, there are more weddings and funerals in my life than ever before) that I need some variety. My job requires me to wear clothes, that’s about the gist of the dress code, but I wear a shirt and tie and jeans almost every day because it’s my look. When it get’s colder I tend to wear a sport coat too and I’m by far the nicest dressed person in my office. So what? Wear what you want to wear. I’m not fooling anyone into thinking that I’m 19, so why wear clothes that give that impression?

When the times do come that I have to wear such things as a rule, I think I wear the clothes better than people who don’t wear them on a regular basis. I look comfortable in a suit and tie, I move comfortably and my clothes fit me well. I don’t look like a “suit” or a “stiff”. I look like a well dressed man, which is exactly what I’m trying to pull off.

You heard it here first, folks.

Marriage kills.

Like an ever tightening tie around your neck.

I’ve one suit and one sport coat. I’d like to be able to wear suits more often, not every day or anything, but I’ve worn Dokkers and Polo shirts to work for so long that it’d be kind of nice to put a little effort into dressing occasionally.

And contrary to the prevailing trend, my suit doesn’t fit because I’ve lost weight and bought it a little large because I was putting on weight back then (I suspect the thing is pushing 10 years old now, probably time to replace it).

I have one suit, in very dark grey. I wear it when somebody gets matched or dispatched. I was in a worried streak when I bought it, so I had the pants let out to allow for a handgun in a waistband holster. I can still wear the suit, but there’s no longer room for the gun.

I have more than a dozen ties, for some reason. I’m tempted to wear some as sweatbands at the gym.

Knock-knock.
Who’s there?
Fornication.
Fornication who?
Fornication like this, you probably oughta wear and suit and tie.

As a high tech worker my self who interviews his share of engineers. Maybe about 1/3 of them come in suits. None of the engineers wear suits to work even going up to senior VP level. The lawyers at work while dressing better in general don’t wear suits to work often. The high up business people sometimes wear suits it seems to depend on if they are meeting with people outside the company that day. Suits have really falling out of favor as business attire on the west coast in the tech world.

I generally have my suits for personal reasons. It is fun to dress up and go places.

Numerous. Wearing one right now.

I haven’t tried my suit on in ages, so I suspect it doesn’t fit anymore.

Usually, when I attend a wedding/funeral/formal occasion, I’ll wear slacks/shirt/blazer combo but not a matching suit-suit.

Though my wife did mention a week ago it might be nice for me to have one again, so 2008 will probably be time to upgrade.
