Men: Do you own a suit?

Inspired by this thread, where the question came up: do most men own at least one suit that they can wear to weddings/funerals/formal occasions? I instinctively assumed that they do, IME. Diogenes says no. I’m just wondering and would be interested to see if you do have one, even if it’s from the Salvation Army, and it’s way back in your closet.

I own a suit. I am no longer sure it fits.

Yes, I do. I had to - those bastards paid me to wear it

Seriously, I own two suits. One is now too scabby to be worn, but suits are like the nasty chocolates in the box - you may not want them, but you can’t throw them away.

The other is just about acceptable, but I hope to hell that I don’t need to interview for a suit and tie job anytime soon. The suit is sort of, well, shiny. I have a stack of ties, too. People keep giving them to me. Do I look like a guy who’d appreciate a tie?

Why yes I do. Thanks to the generosity of a former employer, I have two!

I bought my first suit this summer (I was 24), in Brazil. I still wouldn’t have one if I wasn’t in the wedding party.

I have three suits.

I do – it’s from my high school graduation. It’s doubtful whether I have a pair of dress pants that still fit me, though.

I own a suit, but I haven’t worn it in years and with the weight I’ve put on in the past year I suspect it may not fit very well at the moment.

I’ve got 2 suits. Mostly for special occasions , though, and the crappy one I wore at a trade show a few months ago because I had to.

By crappy, I mean thrift store $5 Penny’s suit.

I bought my first suit in November of 2006 for a very fancy wedding I was attending. I’m 36. I’ve actually worn it several times since - I think I look quite dashing in it.

I have two. One from the Salvation Army that I got for maybe 5 bucks when I was in 8th grade and another that I got after my aunt saw me in the Salvation Army suit. I’m pretty sure her horrified shriek is still echoing across the cosmos. A suit is one of those things that before you get you think, “When would I ever need this?” but afterwards, you realize it is a handy piece of apparel.

I have one suit and one tux. I wear the tux way more than the suit.

Answering for my husband – he doesn’t own a suit. He had a spiffy aquamarine polyester suit when I met him, but somehow it got lost when we moved.

I like suits and tailoring. In fact, I’m working on a purple tailcoat at the moment. Mostly, I wear blazers, and don’t exactly own a full suit, but I’m working on it.

I’ve never gone out and bought “a suit,” but I have a matching jacket and dress pants (black), equivalent dress shirt (white), and a collection of ties to get me through most anything I’m likely to encounter in the hectic life of a stay-at-home translator and party hack.

One of these days, though, I should really go and get a good suit.

My husband had two-- one lame one he pieced together over the years, and the very nice one he bought for our wedding, that he’d wear to future formal occasions.

ETA: Both dads, both best men, and both brothers all had suits that they wore to our wedding. We did not demand this, but they did indeed wear them of their own volition, so I know they have them.

I’m not male, but I know the answer for a lot of my male friends:

Dad - Yes if plaid, flared suits from the 70s count. If not, then no.
Fiance - Yes
Sister’s boyfriend - Yes
Cousin 1 - Yes
Cousin 2 - Yes
Uncle 1 - Yes
Uncle 2 - Yes
PhD Student 1 - Yes
PhD Student 2 - No
Lawyer friend 1 - Yes
Lawyer friend 2 - Yes
IT friend - Yes

I wore out my last suit, and didn’t replace it yet. I have several sports-jackets-and-ties combos and wear them regularly to work - they’re necessary both at the office and when I’m in court.

Two - for formal occasions it’s a Donna Karan and for casual it’s an Ermenegildo Zegna.

No.

And I don’t believe this poll is going to prove anything. This board skews towards a white, middle class, 30 something demographic. I still say it’s not safe to assume a guy owns a suit just because he’s a guy.
