ArchiveGuy: Yes. Elfman did a great job on the score. (but he always does)
Rue DeDay: Details, man! Dish out the trash!
I got that impression about Linda Fiorentino as well when I watched the audio commentary for Dogma.
Kevin Smith and crew were less then impressed and at one point in the commentary Kevin says something to the effect of wishing he had cast Janeane Garofalo in Lindas role instead.
Yesterday I bought the Deluxe Edition DVD. With my one-day Border’s discount it would have been $21.21 and Best Buy had it for $19.99. Since it was the weekend and it was cheaper…
MiB is starting to grow on me. As you could tell by my OP I was kinds luke-warm about it. But having now seen it twice in seven days, I’m picking up more of the details and that makes it more fun. I listened to the commentary, and it was amusing if not all that informative. I saw the original featurette on the VHS tape I rented last week, and it’s also on the DVD. There’s also a new featurette on the DVD.
I like the dialog, such as when they’re leaving the morgue and “Jay” asks “Kay” if he’d “flashy-thing’d” Fiorentino before. “Yes.” “Aren’t you worried about damaging her brian?” “A little.” Or the scene where the fleeing alien gave birth to a baby squid. Kay: “Did anything about that strike you as unusual?” Jay just stares back with a look of disbelief.
I still think that there’s “something” missing. I can’t put my finger on it though. Is it that Will Smith isn’t sufficiently (believably) freaked out by the whole business? Is it because the story is too linear? Is it because of all of the hype when it came out (i.e., you couldn’t escape it if you wanted to)? I don’t know. But I enjoyed MiB on my third viewing of it more, I think, than I did the first time I saw it. Looking forward to MiiB.
There is a downside to MiiB, of course. I’ve been wanting to buy a few black suits for a long time. (I have this thing about dress codes, so I wanted to get a “uniform” I could wear every day as a subtle jab.) Now I don’t know if I can.
I thought the original was good, funny, well-written and very enjoyable.
Does anyone know why the wonderful Linda Fiorentino isn’t in MIB 2? It seemed to me like they ended the first one setting LF up for a starring role in the inevitable sequel. What happened? Contractual disputes?
I saw it on DVD about half a year or so after it left the theaters, and I remember liking it. But I’ll be damned if I can remember one thing about the movie.
I liked it though, I just can’t remember why…

******* FLASHY THING *******
You never saw the movie. What you saw was swamp gas released by a weather ballon that was trapped in a thermal pocket and illuminated by Venus.
I liked it but I thought that it was too short. It’s your stereotypical summer blockbuster-hope-it-grosses-over$250 million-so-we-can-make-a-sequel-type of movie.
Tommy lee Jones does the deadpan acting thing so well.
I love the scene from the trailer when Smith uses the remote to bring the Mercedes up and the driver melts into the steering wheel.
K: Does that come standard?
J: Nah, it originally came with a black dude, but he kept gettinmg pulled over.
K: Uh-huh slight nod of his head
I’ll probably see it but I’m not gonna wait in line all night.
Come to think of it, I’ve never waited in line all night for anything, movies, concert tickets.
I don’t know Ms. Fiorentino, but she has a reputation for being extraordinarily difficult to work with. More than one of her former directors has sworn never to film a movie with her it in again.
