I’m late you the party, by my husband wears Teva’s most of the time, including with jeans. And if my son needs to wear something on his feet, he wears slides, no matter what he’s wearing on his legs.
But maybe you wanted a fashion opinion, and I’m kinda fashion-blind. But, fwiw, i don’t think I’m the only one. I think you should wear what you find comfortable.
(Speaking of which, in the winter i often wear sandals with socks, even though i know the look is widely reviled. But… My feet sweat a lot. I’ll be cold if i don’t wear socks. But if I’m just hanging around indoors, the sandals are going to be comfier than closed shoes. And i don’t like wearing just socks. It’s slippery, and the socks wear out really fast.)
My brother the fashionisto says no way, but for going on 30 years I’ve regarded his opinions as a contrary indicator, and I’ve just spent most of a week on the beaches of Maine mostly in jeans/chinos and sandals.
I live on a hot, humid island with no major cities, no old money, and no massive corporation headquarters, at least a 3 hour plane trip from anything cool. Formal wear is for cosplayers and employees of the snooty Ala Moana shops. Go to any workplace, you’re apt to see a man in long pants and sandals. Like me.
Two reasons:
It’s just about freaking impossible to find decent dress shoes for my feet that don’t end up pinching or crushing something. For my last job, my family searched online for several weeks for the right pair. Also, I find socks hot and restrictive and only wear them when absolutely required…
Through lots of frustrating, bitter, embarrassing experience, I’ve learned that denim is pretty much the only pants fabric I can count on to not get ripped to hell in a few months. I do have a few pairs of normal slacks, but I find I have to replace them a lot more frequently than my trustworthy jeans. (Oh yeah, Wrangler all the way. For the quality of their pants, I can forgive that stupid Fortunate Son commercial.)
And…that’s it. Clothing isn’t a very deep subject with me.
I stumbled across this photo of legionnaires marching in some hot-looking climate. They appear to be wearing sandals and are pretty well covered up (in loose clothing, not jeans). I assume they know what they are about.
In Pakistan my daily wear was similar to this. Shorts and even short sleeves were not considered suitable for anyone over 11 years old (in secondary school). Outside of school uniforms (long trousers, cotton “dress” shirt, tie, black leather lace up shoes) and some formal events, this was the default attire.
And leather sandals.
From pictures I see on social media of my classmates’ families it seems like “western” garb is now more common for middle class urban people. But 40 years ago western pants and shirts were considered uncomfortable in the heat and humidity. Closed shoes and socks and tighter fitting shirt and trousers.
Comfort is definitely key. Only thing that keeps me from leaving the house in a local punk band t-shirt, cargo shorts, compression socks to my knees, and black high-top Chucks is…I don’t own any Chucks. 99% of my excursions away from my house are to the grocery store so the missus and me don’t starve to death. I don’t go to the store to meet nice people, so I really prefer it if someone leaves me alone because my clothes look like I’m damaged. Got nothing productive to say to them anyway.
Sandals & Jeans? I really couldn’t care less what someone else covers themself with, as long as they are comfy and moving toward some kind of inner peace.
Men in jeans and wearing sandals is absolutely fine, as long as, there are no socks as many have already said. It’s a casual look though and not for business purposes. I don’t even think it works for business casual.
Yeah, flip-flops are stupid looking, hurt your feet and arent safe.
However, good walking sandals ( Keen, etc)are a joy to wear, and if someone want to wear them with long pants- why not?
Nothing wrong with sock with sandals- the hate came from retired dudes wearing black knee sock with their sandals and shorts when first arriving in warm climes.
What is wrong with sock and sandals?
I know an outdoor hiking kinda guy who wears sturdy walking sandals all the time when outdoors (indoors too), and just carries a pair of wool socks in his daypack when things get cold.
I’ll wear Keens with jeans all year, with socks if it’s really cold. My daughter has tended to wear Keens all year, but the next winter will be her first in Chicago. She may rethink not wearing socks then.
Ahhh, but therein lies the rub. I’ve never seen anyone with sandals and socks who even knew what inner peace is.
BTW, if you love Keens, you don’t have to wear sandals in cooler temps. You can get them as “real shoes”. Waterproof, good arch support, and long-lasting.
