Men!

Master And Commander was on last night. Whenever I see or think of ‘seafaring movies’, I can’t help but think about…

Men, by Martin Mull.

…A certain kind of pirate, yes, we’ve been called that.

For me, it’s always John Belushi as Captain Ned in the Miles Cowperthwaite sketches that they did whenever Michael Palin hosted SNL back in the '70s: “We’re manly men on a manly ship doing manly things with men!”

I wish I had a digital copy of Men. I have a cassette tape somewhere, on which I recorded The Doctor Demento Show on KMET in the '80s, and Men is on it.

There was someone I knew in college who had collected tapes of Dr. Demento. Somehow it came up in conversation that someone else we both knew had called in a request once and his voice was on the air. Friend 1 went through his collection and found that show.

Is this version, Martin Mull’s, the original? Cause I’ve wondered for decades who and where and when that song came from! (Yes, long before the stupid sitcom…)

Steve Sullivan’s [NSFW]A Heap of Trouble[/NSFW]. It’s what happens when men are not on ships.

Throw your rubbers overboard, there’s no one here but men, men, men, men…

I have a digitized copy somewhere, copied off the Dr. D. show long ago. Not totally clean, as it has something else at the beginning and ending of the song. I’d offer to share, but that would be wrong, so I won’t.
