mental riddle that 98% all answer one way

You reckon? Based on what? Define vegetable. Define fruit.

i thought of a carrot.

interesting

Biologists define a tomato as a fruit because it’s a seed-bearing part of a plant. For the purposes of business and law (taxation, tariffs, etc), the US Supreme Court declared that tomatoes are vegetables (cite):

I wonder if it means rhubarb is a fruit…

I thought of a cardboard cut-out of a carrot.

OK. I carroted.

[donning Dr. Freud hat/] Hmmmmmm…6 (sounds like sex)…inches, acceptable average penis size…carrot…phallic.

Did someone say, “cucumber?” Phallic too, more obvious than carrot.
Artichoke?
Celery (vaguely phallic)
Lettuce (let us…)
Tomato … bursting with nice, juicy seed. And also a fruit, now THAT’s interesting.
Corn…erm…never mind, see tomato.

Well, after blanking completely for a second or two, I thought of squash.

Thanks, scr4. I knew that already, and wasn’t going to let sailor’s unqualified statement stand unchallenged.

I was thinking of the colour orange, but settled for tomato. It’s probably a fairly generic answer though. I think the “98%” figure deserves a bit fat cite? though.

I thought of cucumber.

I thought of celery, but couldn’t remember the word for it, so I went with asparagus instead.

I thought of lettuce.

I panicked and said grape.
Then i corrected myself and said celery.

Am I still special?

I said carrot!!
ahhh! GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!

First I thought of onion. Then I thought of corn, a corn whose seed is pure.

I said “carrot”, but it’s 'cause I wanted to get the right answer.

*I was thinking *rutabega.

I thought of cucumber.

In a related note, Penn & Teller’s How to Play In Traffic has a trick that involves asking someone to name a vegetable. They mention that “carrot” is the answer most folks give first time around, and include a piece of cellopane with a carrot drawn on it for use in the trick.

Another “tomato…wait…no…carrot” person.

Wouldn’t it have been more interesting to do a test of this idea rather than reposting the original riddle? Something like:
2+1

1+1+1

1+2

Think of 3 for 15 seconds.

You’re thinking of pea.
Oh well, too late now.

Carrot here too.

Darn,I’m stuck on the answer to problem number three.

Could I look at someone’s paper over their shoulder?

Oh,alright,I too thought of a lousy carrot. I feel so,so…well,COMMON,if you must know. I’m prepared to be shunned along with all the other dumb bunnies who thought and then ADMITTED they thought about carrots.(By the way, what IS updoc)?

This has been discussed in a million threads. The word “fruit” has different meanings and different connotations. Botanically it is a fruit because (well, it has been explained by scr4). But for the purposes of common speech the definition that counts is the culinary definition where a tomato is a vegetable just like a green pepper.

Now, give us your definition of “fruit” and see if it is consistent. Tell me something. If someone had answered “the first vegetable that came to my mind was a green pepper”, would you say that’s no good because it’s not a vegetable, it’s a fruit? How about green beans? Fruits too? Zuchinnis? Shall I go on with the list?

BTW, are dried beans also fruits?
