I know that it’s been discussed before, sailor. I’ve discussed it here before, too.
Your apparent response to these posts (the only ones mentioning tomatos)-
was:
in apparent contradiction to those posters who said tomato was “fruit” or “not technically a vegetable”. Your unqualified assertion that it’s a vegetable was not correct.
I thought of broccoli, only because it had recently come up in a conversation, where I learned that broccoli has a rudimentary nervous system (whence it was claimed that broccoli could feel pain when it was killed).
Isn’t the whole thing meant to ride on the back of (Billy Connelly’s?) supposedly humourous assertion that whenever you throw up, there’s always carrots in it, even if you’ve never eaten a carrot in your entire life?
You know: six six six six six six sicsicsicsick sick sick sick sick…
The thing is, I thought I was being clever by thinking of carrot.
And who the fuck cares what you classify a tomato as? If you’re sitting at the dinner table with some tomatoes left over from your salad, and Mom gives you that look and says, “eat your vegetables” you damn well better do it before she gives you a flying lesson.
Shit. I DARE you to get into it with Mom that it’s not a vegetable, but a fruit–or a berry to be more precise…wouldn’t have any fucking teeth left to eat the thing with.
I said banana too, and wasn’t going to tell off on myself, but I noticed Futile Gesture was brave enough to admit the same. The OP did say to go quickly, so I did. If I would have given it more thought, I would have guessed tomato too, but now I see that botannically speaking it is considered a fruit too. Well, I did some more research on this, and I found a cite that said botanists will define fruit, but not vegetable. They only speak of vegetative. Is this true? I’ll give the link in just a second. For now, I don’t agree with the 98% figure at all. Just the fact there is much confusion over what is a vegetable or fruit should seriously question that figure. Is tomato a fruit or a vegetable? Botanists classify tomato as a fruit. Horticulturalists classify it as a vegetable. As has been pointed out the Supreme Court also considered tomato a vegetable. If you come to Texas, and you don’t want to get a lynching, if you think tomato is a fruit keep it to yourself.
Just like davidm, I blanked for a second and then thought of squash. And before reading the answer, I thought that I must have come up with that because it was close to “six,” at least because they start with the same letter.
You carefully avoided answering my question which I will proceed to restate: So you agree that * for the purposes of this thread a green pepper or a green bean are also fruits? If so, how so? If not, why not? In the supermarket you expect to find tomatoes, green peppers and green beans in the fruit section? Please explain and support your answer.
