So, I slipped going down the stairs the other day. Twisted my ankle badly enough to decide to go to the ER. I have no health insurance so it’s my policy to avoid medical care unless required by massive pain or massive blood loss. This incident met the massive pain criteria.
Spent two hours in the ER on Christmas Eve and discovered that I had broken all three bones in my ankle. They called it a ‘trimalleolor fracture’. Or something like that. And it requires surgery to repair. I’ve been referred to an orthopedic surgeon. Meanwhile I’m splinted from toe to knee and still in pain. Dammit.
Well, this is a fine mess I’ve gotten myself into.
Apparently, I didn’t make Santa’s ‘good list’ this year!
Thanks everyone for the warm wishes. Well, today I get to call the surgeon and find out the next step…I’m very afraid! Not looking forward to going under the knife…
The good news is, I’m finally getting the hang of these crutches - I no longer have to crawl on my belly like a reptile just to get around!
How does paying for surgery work without health insurance? Are they willing to bill you retroactively? I would figure they’d want it upfront. Or is this considered life-threateningly necessary?
