Message Boards

During the summer months I am quite bored at work. I spend a majority of my day just cruising the internet and it get’s old really fast. I love the Straight Dope message board and am looking for other boards that are somewhat similar. Suggestions?

Not a single response? Hmmmm.

Sort of depends on what parts of SDMB you like best, Great Debates, General Questions, Cafe Society, etc. But a couple suggestions that should have you covered either way:

Giraffe Boards

Reddit. Ok, Reddit is huge and the format takes some getting used to, but start with the AskReddit subreddit. One thing I really like about Reddit is you can upvote comments/posts you like and downvote ones you don’t like. Also anyone on Reddit can start their own subreddit.

I have yet to find another board that allows debate/discussion combined with civility or flaming (The Pit) that isn’t modded 7 ways to Sunday to the point of almost making it impossible to have a discussion.

But if you just want places to read:

http://www.etiquettehell.com/smf/index.php <– no cursing, no flaming and no sex talk, register to see all of the forums

http://customers-suck.livejournal.com/ must register to see all posts
http://bad-service.livejournal.com/
http://vaginapagina.livejournal.com/

I like Quora (www.quora.com) and FARK (www.fark.com).

Not 100% exactly like our humble SD here, but interesting enough: Quora and any number of sub Reddits.

There’s also [URL=“http://city-data.com”/URL] if you’re wondering about what it’s like to live/work in every state/province/almost every country. They also have a bunch of different interest boards.

Thanks for your responses and providing me with the links. I’ll check them all out.

I use to join some message boards but with likes of social media now for the most part message boards are dying really fast.

Now there only a handful of the most common message boards :eek::eek::(:frowning: but not doing heydays of late 90’s and pre 2005 when message boards where really popular.

The past 10 years and very much so the past 5 years I seen major drop in message boards as social media take over.

Interesting, I hadn’t realised that. Personally I find social media entirely inadequate for discussion and much prefer internet forums. Lately have joined Reddit which works and has gems daily.

Before social media people when they came home from work or school they spend time on message boards, yahoo groups and setting up web sites like heydays of geocities. That was their hobbies, relaxation and talking to people.

Now people are addicted to facebook and twitter the likes of social media. This gives people less time to play around with message boards, yahoo groups and setting up web sites.

Most high school kids and college kids are checking social media 10+ times a day and are addicted to it.

In the 90’s to 2005 there was so many message boards, yahoo groups and people setting up web sites it was crazy. People coming home from school or work and hitting message boards, yahoo groups and people setting up web sites.

Now for the most part yahoo groups is dead and full of spam.
