I got a kick from some of the comments from the young’uns in that youtube link. By all means Lou Reed especially in his old age, is a terrible singer but his influence on modern rock (yes, even metal) is pretty significant.
I have no idea where this will go, and I have no interest in Metallica, but I am curious.
I said on my facebook status the other day that I think this will do for Metallica’s musical reputation what Mike Tyson’s tattoos did for his face. Nothing I’ve heard since has changed my mind. I used to love Metallica and I like Death Magnetic. I thought they were on the way back to relevance… I was wrong.
The sample song really is the worst of both worlds. While I’ve never been a Metallica fan, I have to say their music sounds so much better with James Hetfield singing. And Lou Reed, who I usually like, sounds much better singing Lou Reed songs.
Stepping right past your POV of Metallica (I disagree), it’s because it’s win/win. Lou gets to look cool; and the M Boys burnish the artistic cred. As a business/ brand mgmt move it’s pretty smart.
I find Reed’s voice so atonal that, coupled with his basic pose in interviews, I don’t feel the need to work as hard as he thinks his art merits.
Not sure what I think of “The View”. I actually think Lou sounds better than most people seem to think he does. I read the lyrics to a couple of songs on the website, and… wow. I think I’ll have to listen to it all the way through, but I’m not sure if I’ll end up buying it.
Take the passion and cadence of an early '90’s PSA-type “rap” song, get a Johnny Cash impersonator for the vocals, and slap it on top of some totally unrelated metal.
