Science reporters like pointing out that a lot of these large and passing close to Earth asteroids we’re finding have very recent discovery dates. How many more don’t we know about and which one has Earth’s name on it?

A large object from outside the solar system could come swinging through and kick up a late late bombardment anytime too.

I think we’ve found most of the dinosaur killers, but there’s still plenty of asteroids big enough to cause global damage to be found. NASA’s WISE census is one of the more recent estimates on the amount of Near Earth asteroids.

Each asteroid image counts as 100 objects. The brown ones are what we’ve found, the green ones are current estimates, and the black circles are old estimates. By WISE’s estimates in 2011 we had found:

93% of >1000m (that still leaves an estimated 70 in this size range to be found)
80% of 500-1000m
46% of 300-500m
12.7% of 100-300m
?? of <100m objects
