Method of cleaning printer heads

How does the cleaning of printer heads work? Is there some kind of actual “brush” that cleans them? And how does the “brush” itself get cleaned? I realize each printer is different, but is there some sort of common procedure that applies to various brands and models?

For inkjet printers, the printer squirts ink through the nozzles, down through an aperture below the paper path, where it is absorbed by a large piece of wadding. There is often also another place at the side of the print head path where the print head can ‘dock’ with a device that seals itself to the underside of the nozzles and applies vacuum pressure to allow any dried up material to be squirted out.
