Whenever I see a church sign saying something like “St. John’s Lutheran”, my first thought is always “How do YOU know?”
Oh. that makes it obvious. It started off as an animal hospital.
Since my cancer diagnosis four years ago I’m a regular at the Catholic Overbrook Hospital in Chiang Rai, Thailand.
Excellent service and treatment, my wife’s been in there once as well.
So they take Buddhists and Atheists. ![]()
Any separation of church/state issues with the religious-affiliated hospitals?
Specifically, as an EMT, I took lots of patients to our various local hospitals, including one, since closed, that began with the name “Mercy” & had big crosses all over the place. Some of those were patients were involved in MVAs (car accidents) & were thought to be impaired; they couldn’t perform field sobriety tests because of said injuries. If court houses can’t even have 10 Commandments on the lawn I always wondered about a blood test under duress (1 yr license suspension if you refuse) or w/o consent (if the cop gets a search warrant) under the watchful eyes of a 1’ tall dude hanging on a cross on the wall could potentially cause any issues of evidence suppression later on if one got a lawyer to argue that angle since there was no reason that the blood draw couldn’t happen at a place that didn’t have Jesus on the wall, like another hospital, county fast-track, or even the local holding cell; all of which were locations that others had it done in. After all, if he can get the objective evidence against you dismisses you’d have a greater likelihood of not being found guilty*
-*Personally, I think the DUI laws in this country are BS; they should be treated much more harshly than the slap on the wrist that they get.
Sorry, I had to read that three times to get your point/argument – that is one super-long run-on sentence in the second paragraph.
If I’m understanding your argument, it’s that someone would have a right to object to a blood draw, being supervised by a law enforcement officer, while they’re being treated in a hospital room with a crucifix on the wall?
I’m no constitutional law scholar, but I tend to doubt this would fly.
