Isn’t the past domination by Republicans due to the Cuban exiles favoring Republicans for their past anti-Castro anti-socialist stances?
Yeah, pretty much. At a very simplistic level, the Cuban population down here (Miami is about an hour south of me) has voted Republican for a long time, and that led to the strength of the party in that region.
