Microsoft Photo importing all pix from SD card, not just the new ones

How to import only the NEW photos from an SD card to M/S Photos system on my W10 laptop? Today there are 612 pix on the card and only a few (10-12) are new since my last import from the card. When trying to import, the system tells me that ALL of the pix are new and imports them all, saving duplicates and triplicates. It now says there are 20,000+ pix on the PC. I’d guess 4,000 or so. The minimal Photo help data says to use a USB cable (vs. plugging the SD card into the laptop). Would that matter on the duplicate imports?

Do you have to import them into the Microsoft Photos system?

The reason I ask is that I have a mac that wanted to do the same thing the first time I plugged in my phone. But at least there was a NO button, and it’s never asked me again.

So I’m free to just put my photos in a folder on the hard drive, without being dependent on the OS’s software (which could change or glitch at any time… at least that’s what my paranoid and fiercely independent brain says).

eta: Oh, and this way I don’t even have to transfer “All New Photos”, either. I just do it manually.
So many photos on my phone are helpful on the phone (like photos of tools and their prices at different hardware stores). Heaven knows I don’t want to back those up, or fill up my hard drive with them.

You should be able to copy & paste through the normal Windows folders.

All my photos are from 4GB or 8GB SD memory cards, no phone pix. I’ve just deleted all 1100 dupes & triplicates from the hard drive back to July 2020 so they’re gone. Now I’ll start using a new SD card in my trusty Nikon A900 SLR that I bought as an “open box” deal for $4.19 (99% off) several years ago. Having just viewed about half of them, it looks like I might have 19,000 pix, at least 3,000 from my two-year Mediterranean cruise courtesy of the 6th Fleet plus 3 months inland Europe (I scanned those from Instamatic camera mostly 26 mm slides several years and PCs ago). Thanks both of you above, digs & bootb. I’m open to suggestions for an easier and understandable filing system than M/S Photos. Istarted with Picasa but that was dropped.

Do you really need to keep Nineteen Thousand Photos?
For every hundred pics I take, I’d bet an average of twenty make it to my laptop (and then to a backup hard drive).

For me it’s an anti-hoarder/anti-clutter phase of my life (that I’m TRYING to embrace…).
So when I find a dozen photos of the same subject, I’ll pick one or two to keep. And crop/color correct.

It’s tough, but if I’m really honest with myself, no one’ll ever say “Gee, you have a hundred shots of your kids. I can’t wait to wade through them all, and then hopefully you’ll have another hundred!”

I just dump 'em and sort by date.
Okay, to sound more legit: When I transfer them to my computer I specify a “Pics” folder (that I made a decade ago). Then when I open the folder, I click on the “Date Created” header, which sorts them oldest to newest (or vice-versa).

Now, I really should sort them into separate folders like “Family Holidays”, “Kids”, “Vacations” and/or tag them. But I always used to say “Oh, I’ll do that when I retire”. Well, I’ve been retired for years now, and apparently I’d rather be posting here than organizing photos…

But if I view my Pics folder by date, dammit, they’re organized! Then I just have to figure out if that wacky shot of Drunk Grandpa I want to find was last Thanksgiving or the one before…
