This is a netbook with MS Works, Open office (open source freeware), and MS Word viewer . I can’t stand MS Works, (Christ Jesus it sucks) but I don’t want to get rid of it completely. The problem is that I can’t figure how for it NOT to be the default.
I’d like to be able to select programs when opening files off the net, but the “select program access and defaults” thing in the start menu only lets me control browser (firefox), e-mail, java, instant messaging, and media player.
Anybody know how I can remove works as the default program for opening Word documents?
My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types (tab)
Set .doc and .docx and maybe .rtf to open with the program you want.
There are also settings in the browser (firefox at least) on how to handle downloaded files.
Or right click on the file -> Properties -> General Tab -> (about a third way down) Change
This will give you the option to change the default program for that file type.
Why are you leaving it on your computer with it does nothing open office cannot do
First, thanks for all the suggestions so far. Some don’t really quite work and some have potential, but it would take way too much detail to explain the gremlins (it’s not solved yet). Keep 'em coming, though. I’ll try anything and everything.
That’s a good question. And it is the “nuclear” option I have considered. I’m hesitant, though, because I don’t have a CD ROM drive for this thing… yet. I can get a peripheral - I just don’t want to spend the money. I’d like to use works as a fall back. I like redundancy. For example, Firefox is my go to browser, but I’ll use Chrome or even Explorer sometimes too. But, well, Works sucks syphlitic donkey balls so I just may get rid of it anyway. It’s just that I won’t be able to get it back.
