Middle Manager of Justice (iOS) is out

It’s free-to-play, with in-app purchases, which makes me kind of sad. I know that it’s the most effective way to monetize games, but I’d rather see a free demo with an upgrade to a paid version.

That said, it’s a fun game. Like many other iOS games, it uses time as a game mechanic, but unlike most, time only passes when you are playing. I think I like that a lot.

The art style reminds me a lot of John Kricfalusi or Genndy Tartakovski - very cartoony, in a good way. The heroes are entertaining, with backstories and personalities. I’m not sure how long it will hold my attention, but I’m intrigued right now. It will be interesting to see what the future content additions do to the basic gameplay.

Middle Manager of Justice pits players in the management of a justice branch, where all the employees are super heroes.

It was fun for a while, but I got bored with it pretty quickly. It was just the same thing over and over again. Plus I would have liked to have more than 4 heroes active at once.

I didn’t spend a dime on IAP and didn’t need to. If you build the room with the computer stations and upgrade the computers and the room itself you can make your heroes work for enough coins to unlock everything you need. In fact this was a bit of a problem, as I unlocked and upgraded everything in the base (all rooms, and all rooms had 4 fully upgraded stations) about halfway through and the rest of the game felt kind of flat. I could still train and research but I wish there were more rooms and more base stauff to unlock.

There are some glitches in the game, most notably the training montage soundtrack does not seem to work on characters with high intelligence, and actually would sometimes increase the amount of training time. Even on the other characters it seemed to reduce training time by 25%, not 75%. With some characters the intelligence boosting items reduced training time but the montage didn’t. There’s a few other minor glitches but that one’s probably the worst, especially given how much time it takes to train at higher levels.

I really wish you could have more than 4 active heroes, you could have 4 ready for battle and the rest doing training or researching. You can send heroes into battle in the middle of training, and the game does not give you any warnings, but they’ll stop training. Also when the battle is over, if you make them resume training, sometimes it doesn’t pick up where they left off, or give you the proper amount of training time remaining.

Tip: Before you log off, make sure all your characters are training or researching, they will train or research while the game is shut off.

The other problem was I either had a bug in my game or the game is not finished. I had enough research but didn’t unlock any new areas or bosses. I got to the last area (the red one with the White House looking building). This little green guy showed up during the battle where you destroy that duplicating machine but I didn’t get to fight him. After that battle, I just got regular bad guys, and couldn’t move on. There are a couple more areas that say “coming soon”, but the game feels unfinished right now.

Nice little game with some minor glitches, but it feels unfinished right now. I am hoping there is a big update in the near future.

I understand that the 4-active-hero limit is due to memory concerns in the base. I’d have preferred to give up the eye candy of wandering heroes in the base to get more active heroes, especially since the use of the wandering heroes as buttons is kind of annoying. Also the lack of status indicators for heroes unless you click/touch on them, combined with the inability to manage heroes from the roster screen, just makes the whole experience a lot more annoying than i wanted.

Ok that makes sense. You can send inactive heroes into battle though, which just seems wrong. I wonder if that’s an oversight or working as intended.
