Middle Tennessee is Washing Away

Most of the bars on Broadway are ok, but that really depends on which part of Broadway that they’re on. I know a couple were open last night. The Ryman is fine. The Opry House is a mess.

The bars and shops on Lower Broad (1st-3rd Ave) have varying degrees of flooding.

I know a couple of people who work at the Opryland Hotel. Here is what I know:
– Briley Parkway all along the hotel area is closed (Lebanon Pike to McGavock)
– the hotel is (or was) under 6-9 feet of water
– there are underground service areas (kitchens, laundry, etc) totally submerged
– diesel fuel tanks, used for emergency power, were overturned resulting in a flood of diesel mixed in with the water
– some of the offices located near the main building (closer to the river) are totally submerged

My company was supposed to have a convention at the hotel in August, and we are scrambling for a new location of sufficient size. They are saying 4 months to reopen the hotel, but people are speculating it could be more like Christmas before they can be ready.

This is all hearsay from employees who work there, most of whom have not seen the damage first hand, so take it for that.

Rumor I heard was that Opry Mills is looking at not being able to reopen until December. No confirmation on any of that though.

CNN just did a feature piece on the flood.

Things are slowly getting back to normal. We’re awaiting word that we’ve got permission to occupy our buildings up in Metrocenter, so we’re probably back at work today.

Briley is back open by Opryland.

The fish are all fine at the mall.

I can’t believe that the water did not get into my basement! It was almost up to my sliding glass door (I have a walkout basement), and I was pretty sure that it would get in, at one point. My sister, who lives four doors down from me (we live in Caldwell Hall, near Grassmere Zoo), had some water seep into her basement, but not enough to do major damage, thankfully.

I had been out and about Saturday morning – I am glad I got my errands done early.

It really has been a crazy few days here!

I saw a lot of cars floating around in the flood waters in these videos. Have these cars been searched to see if drivers and passenger(s) had gotten out in time? My heart goes out to everyone who was negatively affected by the flooding.

In at least one case, a woman’s body was found.
