Middle Tennessee is Washing Away

The Cumberland continues to rise. It’s expected to crest sometime this afternoon. My companies’ offices and data center are behind a levee, so hopefully this stops before it overflows. Power has been shutdown to the building, we’re working off a generator.

The Opryland hotel is flooded. 4-5 feet of standing water. Most of the low level areas are destroyed. The Gibson Guitar USA plant was flooded. Probably a month before they can start production again.

This is already worse than the giant tornadoes back in 98 that went through downtown.

I have driven around the Boro today and it looks pretty good. The only flooding I saw was on at the Thompson Lane Greenway. Most of the parking lot was under water, and the water was within 3-4 feet of the bridge. We lucked out this time, especially compared to Davidson County (Nashville and surrounds).

Hey, TN dopers! Why haven’t you signed up for the dopefest? You have outed yourself now.

Things are beginning to dry out a little here in Lebanon. Hopefully, we won’t get more rain on top of everything. I don’t have to be at work again until tomorrow, and that’s just to wrap up the stuff I didn’t finish over the weekend.

Enjoy your rain day(s) if you have them and stay dry!

(I’m beginning to consider stay dry as a sig, as much as I’ve used it here and in e-mails the past few days. :stuck_out_tongue: )

Any word from **drewbert **or Tuckerfan?

They’ve both posted about it over at Giraffe.

It is God’s judgement on Al Gore.

That might be funny to someone who isn’t living here dealing with all this crap.

I drive over the Cumberland River on my way to work each morning (I commute from Hermitage to Goodlettsville). The river crested at 52.5’ last night - it is amazing. There is a driving range/putt-putt/go-kart place right by the river on Old Hickory Blvd that is under water up to the rooftops of the buildings. Of the six people I work with only two of us could make it to work yesterday. One of my co-workers has no idea where her boat is: it probably floated downriver (btw, did anyone see that clip on the news with the piano floating down the river?).

Grand Ole Opry and the Opryland Hotel are under 6-8’ of water still, but it is finally starting to recede. Someone told me that even the Ryman had flooding all the way up on Fourth Ave! Is that right? The pictures of lower Broadway are amazing. The commuter train depot downtown is still underwater too.

Hope all the Mid-TN dopers stayed safe. Looks like the weather this week will help us dry out.

18 dead in TN alone.

More than 10,000 homeless, last I heard.

Not funny.

Even though it seems like no one outside of Middle Tennessee actually cares about this, I’ll still update with some small information.

Looks like Metrocenter is going to be back open tomorrow. We just got power back in one of our buildings (on Vantage Way), and they’re supposed to inspect the levee again in the morning. Sounds like if that goes well they’re going to allow businesses and residents back in.

For those of you outside of Nashville, Metrocenter is a government/office area, it’s also where the Titans training facility is. And the Maxwell House hotel. Some residential areas as well, but it’s mostly businesses.

I have a buddy in Vaughn’s Gap (Nashville suburb, I guess) and he had video of his backyard (with a pool in it someplace) just raging like white water. Streets were running like rivers. Big mess.

Here are some pictures I took. A couple are in the Sango area of Clarksville. The rest are Riverside. I’ve had people tell me that they didn’t realize how bad the area is.

I’m following the story with great interest, and much sympathy for all of y’all dealing with it. I like hearing about places getting back to some semblance of normalcy. Bring on the updates.

Just got word that all of our power is up, which means the levee is in good shape. We’re waiting on a statement of occupancy, then we’re back in the office.

Highways are in good shape, except 24 has some crumbled pavement around Antioch. And Briley is still closed, cause it’s flooded.

We’re being told this is a 1000 year flood.

Line 'em up Noah, one more time. :stuck_out_tongue:

Vietnam Veteran’s Parkway is still closed northbound (or is it eastbound?) causing a merry mess up here in Goodlettsville today. But most of the other roads around here are finally open and the worst of the debris (fallen trees mostly) has been cleared. I have friends in Bellevue, though, who are cleaning out their home after being under six feet of water.

Hearing that there was nine feet of water inside Opry Mills. Pretty much everything is a total loss. And without the Opryland hotel, we lose like 10 percent of our hotel taxes income.

Pretty devastating all around.

The probablity of getting that much rain in TN is very, very small. Really, y’all have experienced an event unlikely to be matched in any of our lifetimes.

Rebuilding is a slow and painful process, but it can be done. I’ve seen a lot of flood damage over the years and I never get used to it - water is just so insidious, ya know? Best of luck to everyone trying to get their things back in order.
There is some info here about what to do post-flood that might be helpful. Also some other info about the NFIP etc.

What about the important places? Are all the tacky bars on Broad Street okay?
