Midsommar plot question (massive open spoilers)

Great movie, well worth a watch. I’ll wait until post #2 for the actual question.

OK, so I’m relying on my memory here, so details could be off. The cultists tell Dani that they need a certain mix of people sacrificed(including two of their own).

I swear somewhere earlier or something they mentioned that their Oracle needed to reborn or they need a new one and it must be born of incest.

Uh, was that girl boyfriend got drugged into sleeping with somehow related to him? They literally showed her eyes and cut to his eyes…suggesting perhaps they have the same look?

Is this right? If so, did the cultist who invited them here do so for this specific reason?

Anyone understand the incest related part of the story? I did not.

I’m not entirely sure what you’re asking. Are you asking if the red-haired girl Christian has sex with was related to Christian? No, she wasn’t. There is absolutely no hint at that and that doesn’t make any sense. The girl had a crush on Christian and gave him a love potion (pubic hair and menstral blood, mmm) to make him attracted to her. (The story shown on a tapestry earlier in the film.) After Christian is later drugged he’s approved by the female elder to mate with the girl.

The question of the oracle being a result of inbreeding didn’t have any connection to the main plot or characters. It was just more backstory about the Hårgas culture. New people are brought in explicitly to introduce new bloodlines to the group. They only want one who is “unclouded”, not a whole society of them.

I just saw the Director’s Cut of Midsommar and they shed some more light on this: (spoilers for added scenes)

Pelle had shown Maja a picture of Christian before they even arrived so she already was fixated on him before they even got there. Pele brought him specifically to mate with her.

There’s a Director’s Cut? Where can I see it?

Theater, I think.

It’s being shown in limited theaters, usually only late night. Check your local theaters and see if it may be playing nearby. I saw it at an AMC. It’s 2 hrs 50 mins (I think the regular version was 2:20), but actually does not feel long at all! The added material has some really pivotal scenes.

Thanks! I’ll have to look. Plus, it’ll probably show up somewhere soon. I love that movie.

There are currently no plans to release it on video/streaming and no further theater screenings are planned. You can read about the additions here in case those plans don’t change.

Not releasing an extended cut on Blu-ray seems like a bad choice. I’m not sure I want to sit through this one again, but I bet a lot of people would like to see it.

Thanks. I enjoyed the article. And Damn! But, I bet it shows up. If there’s a dollar to be made, it will happen.
