Now this has probably been handled a time or two before but I really can’t seem to find anything on it. I suffer from Migranes (sp) I have had them for about ten years. Been to the doctor and the whole nine yards, no tumors etc. The problem I have is that I can’t seem to find anyone who knows why. I have been told to stay away from “triggers” Like Cheese chocolate and smoking. I have never had a migane after using a “trigger” But not smoking while I have them turns me into a pian filled smoke wanting PITA. So I guess I will ask WHAT CAUSES THEM, physiologically. PS. I think the whole trigger thing is BS.
V-man, I have had migraines since I was 11, and the problem is that no one actually knows what causes them. Some people can identify triggers that cause their own migraines, but they vary tremendously from person to person, and no one knows why said triggers actually cause the headaches.
Ever had migraine with aura? I think they are called opthalmic migranes. You first get this weird aura consisting of a blind spot and then lights beginning in the middle of the eye and moving out…takes about 20-30 minutes then that is followed by a severe all day headache. Not always followed by a headache though. Pretty damn scary the first time you have one. Trigger if any would be bright lights.

Every case is different; what works for some people is useless for others. Same with “triggers.” Sometimes migraines just happen and nobody really knows why.
If you suffer from migraines, please go get checked out; untreated migraine can be fatal, if for no other reason than you wish you could die, it hurts so bad.
I’ve had a few in my life, complete with the “aura” around things that starts the whole deal. The only thing that works for me is something that will knock me out. Usually when I awake, the headache is gone, thanks be.
Good luck to you.

Oh yeah I get them before the pain begins usually for like 30 min then they totally go away then my head expoldes like 15 min later. I can not seem to find anything over the counter that helps them.
Nothing over the counter is likely to help, but sumatriptan is supposed to be the best treatment available by prescription. It’s recently been released in an intra nasal form and should be taken as soon as aura symptoms develop.
Personally, I swear by IV metaclopromide but this soes of course require some form of temporary IV access (needs a doctor).
Oliver Sacks has a very detailed book called “migraine” (very imaginative) which details neurological theories based on arousal (we’re talking brain reticular system activating arousal, not sexual).
More recent theories involve intracranial vasoconstriction/dilation as detailed above.
Here’s a fairly recent thread on Migraines. I think it covers the topic pretty well.

Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted.
Aha, migrains with aura are the only kind I get. I almost think that part is worse than the headache itself.
I also get what I call "traveling numbness", a part of my arms/hands or face will go numb, and that numb spot slowly travels up or down, with the part that was numb before regaining feeling, and some other part going numb. It's very weird.
I actually find that Migraleve (sp?) works well, and is available over the counter (in the UK). I find, on bright sunny days that the reflection of the sun in car windscreens can cause them. Generally, for me it is rapid changes in brightness and contrast. My contact lenses also seem to cause the occasional one (I only wear them whilst playing sports).
I dunno if anyone else has herd of or tried this but I have found that a little somke or two of Marajuana cuts down the pain but does not knock me out like Midren and the other perscrip meds I have taken. Have you all heard of using weed as a Migrain med?? If so is there any thing documented on it.
