Based on what Harper got, this deal is a frigging bargain.
Especially if—and I couldn’t believe it when I read it—the sabermetric going rate for 1 WAR is 8 million dollars per year. Which strikes me as absolutely insane, but I doubt the figure came from nowhere.
I agree; I like this deal a lot more than Harper’s or Machado’s. About a dollar and some change per second, for the next 12 years.
But for what? The Angels haven’t had a winning season in 3 years. Haven’t been to the playoffs at all in the last 4 (and that was their only appearance in the last 9).
TLDR, they suck. With Trout.
Baseball isn’t basketball and unless this is the start of a major investment in the franchise, the end result of this is that Trout will play his entire career for a shitty team that will stay shitty. Granted he will get very rich doing it, but to this baseball fan, it still sucks. Baseball needs guys like Trout out in the spotlight, not stuck in Sucksville, CA.
The Angels have a top ten farm system and Simmons Ohtani and an emergent Jo Adell to go with him. They are also a very wealthy club. They are not Sucksville no matter how bitterly East Coasters moan about it.
