And you are going to keep “not giving a shit”, over and over and over again until it takes, right?
Well, personally I’m not afraid of Apps, data mining, or redlight cameras, chem trails. Or whatever.
I have real things to be fearful of.
If that poster doesnt want to use Apps, that is just fine. But they said “I dont want to give my info for a sandwich”.
That tells me their afraid of them. Maybe I’m wrong. They said they’ve been “building” computers since the 80s.
So…are they stubborn, misinformed, silly? Who can know?
Just trying to tell them that they are safe enough in a world filled with computers and cameras watching us. This is not secret. This is not exactly new info.
If redlight cameras are indeed rare there are still CC cameras, door bell cameras, individuals recording you.
Live in a cave if you dont want to be seen. Only answer.
When I said “here’s me not giving shit” I meant that posters ‘Just asking questions’ nasty opinion of me. It was predictable and not warranted. Just mean spirited, hate talk. We don’t need that.
If you want to ignore me, knock yourself out.
I don’t give two shits, now.
Seems like many shits were given.
But hey, I’m just asking questions.
Why, yes, you certainly are.
Hey, I thought you ignored me? Now I’m just asking questions.
How about that?
What’s that now? Three shits you’re not giving?
Just asking questions.
That is his actual board name.
As many shits as you are not giving, it isn’t as high as the number of the jokes you’re not getting.
I kinda know that, sarcasm, oops.
Anybody got any shit they want to give?
I have no money.
If you wait long enough you’ll have your own shit. 'Cause, shit happens.
Once again, you demonstrate your spectacular powers of telepathy.
My Rite Aid card no longer works. I signed up for it years ago with a fake name, address and phone number. I am not afraid of Rite Aid. I just don’t want to be subjected to all that spam. Thinking an app on a mobile phone can harvest and send data is not paranoia. There are documented case of apps that include that ‘feature’.
What is wrong with that phrasing? You build a computer by choosing parts from different manufacturers-CPU, motherboard, video card, sound card, etc. This used to be extremely common among computer experts. It is less common since almost all home computers are laptops. But, it still happens.
And…?
Don’t get your problem.
Discontinue your fake Rite aid card. It’ll be ok, have a soothing drink and listen to calm music.
I know what building computers means.
Even me. With no IT background or high-school AV classes. (I did work at Radio shack one summer).
They claimed it. Not me.
You forgot to diss me on my typo. Wanna go back and try again?
You said that refusal to use apps meant that a person was afraid of them. I countered that there are plenty of other reasons why some one might not use them. You called refusal to use apps “paranoia” comparing it to fear of “chemtrails”. I countered that there were planty of reasons backed by facts and evidence to be leary.
If you know what building a computer means, why did you use quotes on the phrase?
Finally, I noticed the use of the wrong “their”. I chose to let it pass. Due to ongoing problems with this laptop the cursor keeps jumping around and errors keep happening. A typo is no big deal.
Your continued claims to know exactly what other people are thinking is a big deal.
I said: again, I thought they might mean that.
I also said, I didn’t know, none of us do.
Your preoccupation with what I say, think or might mean seems like a personal problem.
If you ask me, I’ll answer as best I can.
Instead of sniping and putting me down for, as kindly as I could, was expressing my opinion on why Apps are safe. Safe. Been safe for a number of years.
Prove me wrong.
So are store cards, loyalty cards, membetships in the gym, punch cards for a free coffee. Lets go on, debit cards, credit cards, tap to pay. Gas cards. Birthday cards with cash. Good grief.
It’s 2025, dumplin’ 2025!
ETA, how about this, go read their post, see exactly what they said.
No, dumplin. This is the Straight Dope. If you want me to read something, it is your responsibility to quote the post or provide a link.
Safe from what?
Will an app leak out of your phone and give you cancer? No.
Might an app collect data on you and influence what adds you see when you browse the web? Yes.
Might an app collect contact info that leads to you getting texts and other ads you didn’t want? Also yes.
But hey, I’m paranoid. I bought a burner phone number to use when i went canvassing, because i didn’t want to give me two phone number to the app the Democrats all use for canvassing.
And it’s not like there’s a shortage of these:
More than 71,000 mobile app users were affected, resulting in the exposure of personally identifiable and sensitive data that included names, email addresses, phone numbers, and banking information.
So you don’t know what you’re speaking to.
Ahh. I see.
