Some of your “opinions” have the potential to cause real harm to real people. Instead of trying to do better – in keeping with the “fighting ignorance” mission of the Straight Dope Message Board – you tend to get hugely defensive and hammer on the “just my opinion” line, as though that somehow makes it okay to hold opinions based on bad information or no information at all.

To that point:

You don’t always have to have, or contribute, your opinions on a given topic, and the higher the stakes, the more important it is that your opinions are based on something – something substantial, relevant, factually accurate, and well-considered.

I don’t think that’s entirely a fair criticism. She knows nothing about how universal health care works in other countries and has said as much, and also asked for more information so she could learn. Which she got, and thanked several of us for. I hope she reads it.

Frankly I have a bigger problem with Velocity playing Junior Mod and telling Beck that this is supposed to a thread about Australian health care. It was, but has long since morphed into a more general discussion that I think has been useful and informative, with different posters talking about their own personal experiences in different systems.

I hope she reads it, too. I left the thread for a couple days and came back to see she was still going on about how great her US care has been. It’s not too hard to look at life expectancies in other countries when they’ve been linked.

There’s a multiplier effect when she does what she does in perfectly interesting threads.

Very respectable, moderate [no pun intended], valuable Dopers find themselves trying to gently curb her worst (generally, narcissistic) impulses and re-rail good and intriguing conversations.

It lowers the signal-to-noise ratio of nearly every substantive thread in which she can’t resist the apparent compulsion to dive in, head first, totally unprepared to contribute substantively.
