I’ve made this complaint elsewhere but “white knight” is an asinine complaint - like using “woke” as an insult. Standing up to bullying, when bullying is indeed going on, rather than being a bystander, is not something to mock. Misguided or even performative is the issue. In this case completely misguided IMHO.

In forum parlance, it means rushing to the aid of another poster for whatever reason. An accusation typically reserved for when a poster is being hammered by another poster(s) and the accused leaps in to defend them, usually without thinking things through as to why the person is being attacked.

If we’re going to say that serious health problems should affect how we enforce the civility rules, what’s the limiting principle? Is a snide remark okay? Repeated personal insults? Harassment? Where do we draw the line, and why?
I wouldn’t expect my life-limiting illness to buy me extra permission to be uncivil on this forum. If I cross the line, moderate me the same way you’d moderate anyone else. Why would I ask for anything other than this? Why would I advocate for anything other than this? Why should that be the standard?
Our membership skews older, right? How many current Dopers have serious medical challenges? How many have already perished? If health status is going to influence moderation or social expectations, how would that work in practice? Would members disclose diagnoses? Would different conditions warrant different degrees of latitude?

Do you know how to read English? No racial connotation implied you stupid idiot: “white” of “white knight” is not a racial term. The simple to comprehend point is that using a term correctly per its definition has nothing to do with whether or not it is a stupid or even harmful concept. Someone could call me a slur that starts with “k” to reference my religious/ethnic heritage and it meaning exactly what they wanted it to mean is irrelevant.
Defending someone who you perceive is being unfairly or excessively attacked is not derision worthy; being a passive bystander when believe that is going on is OTOH contemptible. Internet culture being bully friendly as it is there is no convenient term to insult those bystanders who look the other way, but there is one for easy use by anyone by anyone who objects to people being pricks.
Again Beck was not being bullied and chela is a dumbfuck. The comment is exclusively about how more often than not someone who throws out the “white knight” shit is just crying that someone is calling out their being an ass. The comparison with “woke” I think is most apt: the people who use the term “woke” as a bad thing are really complaining that someone is calling out their -phobia, anti-, or -ism of whatever sort.
If you have kids did you raise them to ignore what they thought was bullying for fear of becoming a target themselves? I did not.

That really sucks. I’m glad you were okay. The only time my mom stopped breathing, she was already in the hospital, and they were able to attach a respirator fairly quickly. (But she was in the ICU, on a respirator, for months. They had trouble diagnosing it.)

I see now that I did fail a basic goal that I have when communicating - writing or otherwise: know your audience and speak at their level. I had mistakenly assumed everyone here other than chela has neurons that function better than a dysfunctional family in their ability to talk to each other. My bad! Today I learned!
