Military Polls Soldiers on DADT

Do you really know for a fact that it happened that way? It’s possible they just went into racial integration without doing any work beforehand, but even the military of the 1940s tended to be pretty bureaucratic, so I doubt it.

Women on naval vessels and fighter planes I’m sure they did millions of dollars worth of studies on before it was actually implemented. Historically neither of these decisions came out of a clear blue sky with civilian leadership saying, “do this, now.” In both cases it had been talked about for years before the civilian leadership pulled the trigger, at which point it was quickly implemented. During that time between when people first started talking about it and when the civilian leadership actually pulled the trigger, I seriously doubt no studies or research was done by bureaucratic types in the DoD.

It’s also worth noting that with racial integration, Eisenhower actually implemented it on a limited scale at the end of WWII, on his own initiative. This was in direct contradiction to how the Army Chief of Staff felt things should have happened, so it seems very unlikely to me there wasn’t significant internal discussion about the matter.

Furthermore, the Executive Order issued by Truman explicitly makes allowances for things like evaluating morale:

and that would be different than this how?

Look, I don’t think competent command should be blindsided by the reaction of the troops, and I don’t think troops should be led to believe they can control command with their opinions, or ‘civil disobedience.’ I haven’t read this survey, but don’t really get why it’s supposed to be a huge deal.

You do not vote on whether bigotry should be the rule. Treating gays as lesser people is wrong. I don’t care what the troops say. if they had their votes, there would still be no black people in the service. Truman said this will end and it did. Obama should do the same.
