What are the procedures, if any, for notifying the family if a soldier is wounded in Iraq enough to be temporarily relieved from duty? Can the soldier request that his family not be notified or is that standard procedure?
Do Rangers have a tradition of not having their families notified?
All I know is that when the Marine from my church got shot in the hip in the first scouring of Fallujah, his parents were called and essentially told, “Injured, gone to Germany.”
This left a lot unsaid, of course. All they really knew was that he was too injured to leave in Iraq and too stable to die on the flight to Germany.
