I am still fairly young I spent 10 years in 4 active 6 in the guard I got my ETS in August of 2001 and I am seriously considering signing back up active, I do not want a full 4 year committment yes I understand they can keep me anyway under Stop-loss but they cannot pull me back under IRR since my 8 years are done even if I re-enlist correct?
To go further in depth my little sister was activated and deployed over-seas until March of 2006 and that really made this decision easier.
Now my question is if I where to re-enlist would I keep my rank (E-6) my MOS (19Kilo) without having to go back through months of schooling? I would be willing to drop to E-5, but not below that. I have all up-to-date schooling as far as the recruiters have told me to keep my rank.
Now part 2 say I want to join my sisters guard unit rather then return to armor active duty would I have to go through AIT with a bunch of boot camp rookies or do they have another way to retrain me in another MOS and still get me overseas with my sister before her deployement is over?
I’ve had two different recruiters tell me two different scenerios and I need the straight dope before giving away my civilian life once again.
OTT this is not a money thing in the least bit as I have a fairly profitable online cigarette business on the Seneca reservation.
All in all, I do not think any of us would be qualified to answer. Under present circumstances, all this stuff changes, a lot. Depends on you PMOS, conditions of your service and suchlike I guess.
If you are near a base, sashay over to the CSM’s office. He will point you in the right direction. If you are not, routestep to the local recruiter, who I imagine handles this sort of thing.
Thats the problem two recruiters have told me two different things, all I really want is at least to not be demoted below E-5, my discharge was honorable, and my physical fitness would still allow me to pass all PT in the army.
What I would not like to do is go back through months of re-training.
If I chose to go the guard route with my sister there recruiter told me I could re-train in there MOS in a matter of about a month with the unit, but would not tell me if I would be deployed over-seas with her. (Which would be the only reason I would change my 19kilo MOS)
The active duty recruiter told me that the NG recruiter was not being fully honest with me telling me I would have to be deployed just like basic training deployment again to change my MOS. And the only way to get right into a unit would be too keep my 19Kilo MOS and possibly drop down to E-4 (Which is a no go for me)
Either way this is a “great debate” in my immediate family as is right now, my mother, bless her, is raising my little sisters daughter while she is deployed wants nothing to do with having both her children over-seas. But my father being a veteran himself understands the seemingly stupid choice I am making.
OTT but since I let it be known I was interested in re-enlisting and talked to two recruiters I have gotten pamplets like I was 17 straight after the ASVAB’s again word travels fast!
